He really dodged a bullet with the "Hobbit" movies, didn't he?

So congratulations on winning some awards for directing and writing something good!

Wasn't the whole reason he left in the first place is because he wanted to take the time to make quality films that could stand up to the LOTR trilogy, and the studio was putting too much pressure on him to make it the rush job we eventually ended up with?

Even Peter Jackson came out and said making The Hobbit was a miserable experience because of all the deadlines he had to meet at the sacrifice of quality.

I don't think that was the only reason the finished result sucked, but I doubt we'll ever hear the real story. Almost everything about the finished films was bad - every line if dialogue, every costume, every special effects, if you look closely at the props you'll probably realize they're awful too! The rot had to have started early in pre-production, my guess is that Del Toro realized there was no saving that mess.

And funny, back before I gave up on the films I watched the DVD extras, and even though nobody said so, I got a very strong impression that the shoot was a miserable experience

I enjoyed the second one as a mindless action blockbuster, but in comparison to the LOTR trilogy it doesn't hold up. Smaug was so beautifully done I feel like that's where all their efforts went, and then they phoned in the rest.

Hey, I didn't even like the Smaug! He was too massive, to huge to have a skeletal structure that could support his weight, far too huge to fly. He was the size of a multi-story office building, something the size of a dinosaur would have been enough. I mean a dinosaur that can breathe fire and beat you at chess is pretty freankin' scary.

I mean the hobbit films weren't completely without merit, no film with that Thranduil is all bad, but what a waste of time and effort. I look forward to the next remake.
