Because he’s clever enough to know it would make for fascinating television. Had he not that group would have continued to be genial and buddy-buddy with him but the visible change in their manner towards him when he placed the seeds of doubt in their minds revealed how easy it was for their prejudice to take over their better nature.
It was one of the most memorable moments of his entire career as a documentarian. He’s amazing.
