Homemade Review: Netflix Quarantine Anthology Is Pure Filmmaking Talent In Bite-Sized Pieces
With memorable entries from Paolo Sorrentino, Kristen Stewart, Ana Lily Amirpour, and many others, this anthology project is a welcome snapshot of modern times.
by Eric Kohn

If the only way filmmakers could process life in quarantine was scripted Zoom conversations, the art form would be screwed. Homemade, a wondrous and mostly satisfying anthology of 17 short films made over the past two months around the world, proves the opposite. A dense collection of inquisitive, unpredictable and often life-affirming responses to the pandemic from some of the most astute directors working today, Homemade is pure filmmaking talent in bite-sized pieces that doubles as a lively, scattershot collage of the world in 2020.
--------------------
The surprises keep coming. Sebastian Schnipper, best known for his one-take heist thriller Victoria, brings one of the more original approaches to the collection with an amusing look at solo life in quarantine in which he confronts multiple aspects of himself (think Multiplicity with a deadpan twist). Kristen Stewart's entry takes a similar approach into the arena of a psychological thriller, as she endures a psychological breakdown in closeup (while her partner Dylan Meyer addresses her off-screen) and struggles to sort out whether she's dreaming or wide awake. There's not much to it beyond her frantic expressions, but the actor-director allows herself to deliver her most unnerving turn since Personal Shopper.

Reviewer Eric Kohn gives this anthology of short films an A- grade.

There's a lot more to this review than what I quoted, so I recommend that you click on the link and read it in its entirety.

Has anyone seen Homemade yet?
I have not since I do not have Netflix.

reply

Definitely checking this out to see Stewart's directional effort. She is a great actress.

reply

I've seen it, honestly all the shorts are good. Her short is really good, and she does a great job acting and directing it.

reply

I LOVE KRISTEN WEARING SHORTS🙂

reply

I haven't seen this yet either, as I also don't have Netflix. Sounds/looks interesting and gets good marks, especially for her first small directorial effort.

Being that it had the feel of a psychological thriller, like the IndieWire review mentioned, I decided to do a mashup with some clips from her Homemade short film along with clips from Memento, which for some odd reason was the first film I thought of after watching it. So here's the link to the video in case you or any of her fans here on MovieChat is interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xN5wN1mxp1Q

I haven't seen those shorts yet so that gave me a taste of them. As usual Kristen excels at the facial expressions to convey meanings.

reply

This short film was devoid of witty or engaging dialogue, so she pretty much had to rely almost exclusively on her facial expressions, and I thought she did well considering these limitations. This is the reason why I chose to use background sound and dialogue from the film Memento, where Guy Pearce's role reminded me of Kristen's part in this short.

I must admit I have yet to watch the other shorts as I need to find the time to do so. Admittedly, when I did this edit, I was half-asleep, or half-awake, whatever you wish to call it, apropos considering Kristen's character in her Homemade short film struggles to sort out whether she's awake or dreaming as the quote in Carved's comment stated earlier.

All things being equal ...

Nah, I'm not going to finish that sentence.
I only wrote it because Guy Pearce, the star of Memento, was also in Equals with Kristen.
Now they share equal billing in LL's video.

OK, OK, enough with the bad puns already!

reply

I was hoping Pearce would have had a bigger role, not just the small bit part that he had in Equals, as I consider him to be one of the most underrated actors working in Hollywood today. Especially enjoyed watching him in The Count of Monte Cristo, Death Defying Acts, The Hurt Locker, Ravenous, Rules of Engagement, L.A. Confidential, The Time Machine and Memento.

reply

She can't act and can't direct. Just give it up Stewart.
