New poster for 'Underwater'

Well, well, well.
It seems that a poster has just been released for Underwater, which gets released on January 10th of next year.

Quite an effective poster, I must say.
Almost makes me feel like cancelling next week's appointment at my dentist.

Man, that is a huge mouth of a creature shown in that poster!

So now it appears more like Alien meets Jaws.

Has anyone here seen the Cloverfield films?

The reason I ask is because I just read an article regarding Underwater and Cloverfield, titled ...
5 Ways Underwater Could Be A Cloverfield Movie (& 5 Reasons It Won't Be)
https://screenrant.com/underwater-could-be-cloverfield-movie-reasons-not/

Since I have not seen any of the Cloverfield films, none of what is contained in the Screen Rant article makes any sense to me.
Or perhaps I should say almost all of what was written makes no sense to me, as I do understand that T.J. Miller, who is in Underwater, was also in Cloverfield.

So if LL, Ron, Mody or anyone else could explain what the hell the similarities are between the two projects, it would be greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah, I'd also like to know if you guys thought that the Cloverfield films were any good (assuming that you did see them).

I've watched the first two films, Carved, and would rate them around 3 stars out of 4. One of the reasons why I enjoyed the first one was because I didn't know what to expect as I didn't view any trailers or read any reviews and wasn't even aware of the genre of this film prior to watching it. It definitely caught me by surprise as Cloverfield started off resembling a documentary, as it was told in a found-footage style via an amateurish shaky cam, then bam, all hell breaks loose and everything that once appeared normal flew out the window and the larger than life creature then appeared and wreaked havoc on NYC. 10 Cloverfield Lane differed from the first since it was told via a third-person narrative, and the strength of this film and primary focus was definitely the performances by the lead trio of John Goodman, John Gallagher Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Being that I'm a longtime fan of Kristen, one of the ways I would say Underwater could be a Cloverfield movie is because I could easily picture Kristen playing the role that Elizabeth played in the second installment of the franchise. And I could likewise envision Kristen having good chemistry with Gallagher, like she always has with her male costars. Another way it could bear a similarity is if the creature shown in the poster you provided the link to in your OP is an alien creature of some sort, as alien monsters/invasion was the common thread linking all three films in the Cloverfield franchise together. The Screen Rant article you posted the link to speaks of alternate reality games also being a common theme, and considering that the storyline in the three Cloverfield films took place in alternate dimensions, it wouldn't be much of a stretch to add another dimension, this time set deep underwater.

Anyhow, I'll be keeping my eyes open to see if Kristen's character Norah works for Tagruato Corporation, or if there are any Kelvin Gas Stations or characters slurping on Slusho! drinks purchased from convenience stores, because if that's the case, this wouldn't be a mere coincidence as such Easter eggs reoccur throughout the first three Cloverfield films. And one more similarity I hope takes place--fingers crossed that Underwater does as well as the first two films at the box office--although I'm cautiously optimistic as it might end up being more like the third.

Thanks for the info, LL.

I must admit that my eyes grew a bit wider when I read in your post that John Gallagher, Jr. was in 10 Cloverfield Lane, because like T.J. Miller, he shall also appear in Underwater. I appreciate that you mentioned this, because this is something that the Screen Rant article neglected to mention.

And I could likewise envision Kristen having good chemistry with Gallagher, like she always has with her male costars.

I have no doubt that that will be the case when we see them together onscreen early next year.

So that makes two actors from the Cloverfield Universe that are also in Underwater.
Makes one wonder, eh?

Meanwhile John Gallagher, Jr. is now the fourth person from the musical Spring Awakening that has been involved in Kristen's films.

Hunter Parrish played Kristen's brother in Still Alice

I've seen 10 Cloverfield Lane which I really liked and would like to see a sequel, but I have not seen the 2008 film Cloverfield. It seems the two films are very different, the 2008 film about an undersea monster and the later film about an alien attack. So at first take it would seem that Undersea resembles 2008 film Cloverfield. but as CK's link points out Undersea doesn't have the same producer in JJ Abrams, and the Cloverfield movies also have alternate reality games associated with them.

So for the undersea monster there seems to be possible similarities but if the films are connected I would think both would have Cloverfield in the name, as the article also states. So my view is that aside from both films have sea monsters there doesn't seem to be a connection. I think the article was done more for a fun read about all three films. :)
