Anyone else think her best work is still in "The Cake Eaters"?

I thought she was amazing in that. It's certainly unlike anything she's done before or since.

Yes, I have maintained for years that Kristen's performance in The Cake Eaters was indeed her best work, even surpassing her performance in Speak, the film that made me a fan of her. In addition, as good as she was in other films like Clouds of Sils Maria (for which she won a Cesar award -- France's equivalent of an Oscar), Personal Shopper, The Runaways, On the Road, etc., etc., I don't think that they surpass her performance in The Cake Eaters either.

I first saw The Cake Eaters on the big screen at The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival in early November 2007, a week or so before it was announced that Kristen had been cast as Bella in Twilight. The audience, which was mostly comprised of folks from the "silver haired generation" (they primarily came to see a film with Elizabeth Ashley and Bruce Dern, two of Kristen's co-stars in the film), were extremely impressed with Kristen's work. So much so in fact, that most of the questions asked by the audience to TCE director Mary Stuart Masterson in the Q&A session following the film were about Kristen and her performance. And largely because of her work, The Cake Eaters was voted Best American Indie at the festival.

All that being said, it is possible that my feelings on this might change once Against All Enemies gets released later this year. That is the film where Kristen plays Jean Seberg, and there has already been some talk that she just might earn an Academy Award nomination in the Performance by a Lead Actress category.

But for now however, I wholeheartedly agree with you, AngularTurnip.

EDIT: Since I posted the above, Against All Enemies has been renamed Seberg.
It will premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, which begins August 28th.

Yes, I think her performance in The Cake Eaters was one of her best. Hard to say if best as she's done many good roles, but IMO TCE is among her top ones. That's especially because she was young, just a teen and without lots of experience, and still she did an amazing job in that role. Good thread to bring up this movie. :)

Her detractors need to see it. Especially if the only thing they know her from is The Twilight franchise (which is far from her best work).

Judging Kristen solely by her role as Bella in Twilight would be akin to judging Natalie Portman exclusively by her role as Padme in Star Wars: Episodes I, II and III. But the thing is, here on MovieChat as well as on IMDb, the films that Portman is "Known For" are "Black Swan", "V for Vendetta", "Closer", and "Leon: The Professional", despite the fact that her three highest grossing films where she played a major character were from the three episodes of Star Wars which I mentioned previously.

Another actress that comes to mind is Emma Watson whose MovieChat and IMDb page under the heading "Known For" has one Harry Potter film to go along with "The Perks of Being a Wallflower", "The Bling Ring", and "Beauty and the Beast". One would think that at least three Harry Potter films should be included in order to promote her role as Hermione Granger. After all, ask any moviegoer what role Emma Watson is most known for and the vast majority would tell you Hermione from the Harry Potter film franchise.

Similar thing with Jennifer Lawrence, instead of including 3 installments of The Hunger Games franchise, further reinforcing her most iconic role to date in the minds of moviegoers, which of course is Katniss Everdeen, only one installment from this series is included in the films she is "Known For", while two other films that came after the first Hunger Games film was released, which are "Silver Linings Playbook" and "American Hustle", along with "X-Men First Class", rounding out the four films that define J-Law as an actress.

So likewise, instead of listing four of Kristen's highest grossing films to put on her MovieChat and IMDb page, instead, why not mix it up a bit and include at least one of her layered performances in her other definitive films such as "Panic Room", "The Runaways", "Still Alice", "The Cake Eaters", "Speak", "Clouds of Sils Maria", "Adventureland", etc., in order to show those who may not be familiar with Kristen's body of work and impressive filmography, that she is much more than her Bella Swan/Cullen character, that unfortunately, many continue to judge her almost exclusively by.

Very good points. Kristen is definitely a talented actor.
