Kristen is #8 on the IMDb STARmeter this week! (Edit: 11/25/19)

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0829576/

Yeah, for some, this may not be a big deal, but for me it has sentimental value as it brings back fond memories of reading comments from fellow fans when she was one of the most popular actresses in Hollywood. Sure there were lots of flame wars between fans and trolls, especially on The Twilight Saga boards, but it was still loads of fun, especially when I look back in hindsight.

I believe it has been years since she cracked the top 50 and I'm pretty sure the recent release of the Charlie's Angels trailer has a lot to do with it. Hopefully, this means that millions of moviegoers will have their interests peaked enough that they will seriously consider going to a theater to watch her star in this film.

Anyhow, this is a far cry from those who claimed years ago that after her stint with Twilight was over that she would disappear into oblivion. So as a longtime fan of Kristen I feel happy for Kristen and a bit vindicated in the sense that not only does she continue to be a highly sought out actress among film critics and indie circles but also that she is still relevant to mainstream moviegoers in general. This is a major reason why I wanted her to star in a film like CA.

Hello LL. Good thread. Yes, those were fun times on another movie forum when Kristen was high on the meters during her Twilight days. Plus other work she was doing during and after the Twilight Saga which gained her recognition and steps up on the meter scale. Those were fun days. I think now it's maybe less active in a way but even better as Kristen has branched out in different genres and films/roles, plus noted for her work in many of those films/roles especially in film festivals. Also dabbling in directing and writing and her fashion campaigns with Balenciaga and Chanel.

Funny, especially during Twilight days as you mention, the trolls and haters were so active. That happens with any actor of course, and Kristen received her share of it. Remember also the frenzy of the paparazzi as they were ever present flocking around her.

Yep, a far cry indeed from those who claimed she was done after Twilight. She grew easily into adult roles now didn't she, which is often tough for any actor to make the transition. And she continues on nicely, as I said, with other areas of film making. She loves the movie industry and has said if she wasn't acting then she'd be working on the film crews on sets or somewhere industry.

Just a few weeks prior to IMDb shutting down its message boards, Variety ran an article regarding the reason why: https://variety.com/2017/digital/news/imdb-message-boards-shut-down-1201977581/

IMDb Is Shutting Down Its Discussion Boards

Blame the trolls: IMDb, the Amazon-owned website that provides movie, TV and celebrity content, has decided to shut down its message boards because they’re “no longer providing a positive, useful experience” for the vast majority of its users.

I readily recall, Ron, that by the time Breaking Dawn - Part 2 was released, the annoying nature of the trolls had reached its crescendo point. What made them particularly irksome and unique in contrast to a conventional troll was they knew more about Kristen and her films than many of her fans did--the haters seemed totally obsessed with her--they loved to hate on her so to speak. In other words they kept us on our toes and made us question the very essence of our fandom and the very reasons why we became fans of her in the first place.

Yet, despite their ability to get on my nerves and under my skin from time to time, if I had a choice, I'd much rather put up with trolls and haters than having the IMDb boards close permanently because of them, taking the good with the bad. So thankfully we have a forum such as MovieChat, where we can continue to do what we did on IMDb. And you, Carved, Mody and myself haven't skipped a beat.

Even if Kristen were to hang up her acting shoes, I'll still be a fan of her for life, as I could always rewatch her previously released films. But it certainly doesn't hurt when she continues to churn out new and challenging performances, which continues to solidify my admiration of her. And yes, especially when it comes to indie roles, she obviously isn't doing it for the money, so I'm grateful that she continues to do what she loves most, continue taking on such passion projects for the purest of motives.

Sorry LL, but I'm going to have to strongly disagree with the last sentence of the paragraph I quoted.
Yes, the haters were definitely annoying, but they in no way, shape, or form, ever made me question why I became a fan of Kristen.
Once a hater's goal became apparent, I simply banned them from my existence by placing them on my Ignore list. Thus they would never bother me again.

I still hate the fact that IMDb did away with its message boards as there were dozens of regulars on Kristen's board whom I enjoyed hearing from that never made it over to MovieChat. While I still look forward to reading posts from you, Ron and Mody, I do miss the others, a lot.

Anyway, yesterday The Playlist had another article regarding Best Actress predictions ...
https://theplaylist.net/2020-best-actress-oscar-predicitons-20190702/

"While seemingly less competitive than Best Actor or Best Picture -- for the moment -- the race for Best Actress at the 2020 Oscars is certainly filled with familiar faces. Winners Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway and Natalie Portman could be in the mix as well as former nominees Amy Adams (still hunting), Saoirse Ronan and Alfre Woodard. Awkwafina, Tony winner Cynthia Erivo, Scarlett Johansson and Kristen Stewart are looking for their invite to the dance. Don't be surprised if another former winner or two finds themselves in the conversation in the months ahead.

IN THE CONVERSATION
Amy Adams - The Woman In the Window
Awkwafina - The Farewell
Cynthia Erivo - Harriet
Anne Hathaway - The Last Thing He Wanted
Scarlett Johansson - untitled Noah Baumbach film
Natalie Portman - Lucy In the Sky
Alfre Woodard - Clemency
Saoirse Ronan - Little Women
Kristen Stewart - Against All Enemies
Charlize Theron - untitled Charles Randolph film

POTENTIALLY PLAYERS
Julianne Moore - Gloria Bell
Elisabeth Moss - Her Smell
Anne Hathaway - Dark Waters"

So, even though the year is only half over, Kristen's name continues to be mentioned. I wonder if, when Against All Enemies has its premiere, will the reviews of the film once again cause her IMDb StarMeter number to rise above fifty. As for the Charlie's Angels trailer, I am convinced that those high numbers were caused by the inclusion of the scene where Kristen smacks her own butt with the riding crop. ;-)

Meanwhile, I find it interesting that Kristen might be going up against Julianne Moore, who played Kristen's mom in Still Alice, the role for which she won the Oscar. Ditto for Amy Adams and Elisabeth Moss, as they were in On the Road with Kristen. And of course, who can forget Kristen's battles with Charlize Theron in Snow White and The Huntsman.

Oh yeah, almost forgot ... we no longer have to type url and /url inside brackets in order to post a link. Just type in the addy and tah dah, the link will appear when you click 'Submit.'

So do I miss them. It was good, all the discussions and people there. But it did get so messy and IMDB was unable or unwilling to clean it up. They decided to just go with the movie and actor info instead. As I said in my previous post, we were trying to post/find forum alternatives, but since those forums closed down faster than they were scheduled to, not very many people had a chance to see posts about moving to this forum.

I'm looking forward to Against All Enemies and Underwater. Both look to be very interesting films and roles for Kristen. Glad we're getting more info on Charlie's Angels also, as it's looking good too.
Kristen does manage to keep herself quite busy.

The funny thing, Carved, is that from all the years I perused the IMDb forum boards, never once did I put anyone on ignore. Perhaps this had a lot to do with my upbringing, such as being taught by my parents that everyone has a right to their own opinion, that one should learn to agree to disagree. But of course it should also be stated that a line must be drawn somewhere in terms of how far a person can be allowed to go with their opinions to deem them civil and acceptable, as I've come across some pretty obscene and extremist opinions voiced on various forums and chat rooms that are in definite need of moderation.

While Awards Watch does not rank Kristen in their top 5--she's predicted to be among the top 10 contenders--they have some interesting things to say about her chances of being nominated for a Best Actress Oscar: https://awardswatch.com/2020-oscar-nomination-predictions-best-actress-june/

2020 Oscar Nomination Predictions: BEST ACTRESS (June)

Amazon has a trio of previous Best Actress nominees and a winner in Felicity Jones (The Aeronauts), Rosamund Pike (Radioactive, listed as a 2020 release) and Emma Thompson (Late Night) but I think their major actress push will be Kristen Stewart as screen legend Jean Seberg in Against All Enemies. I can see a Venice debut starting off her track, then to Toronto and becoming a staple throughout the season. Amazon has a lot of cards to play, they just need to play them right.

That being said, I've learned not to get my hopes up too high for Kristen as they came crashing down before. I'm just hoping that the usual suspects, Meryl Streep with 21 Oscar nominations and 3 wins, Amy Adams with 6 noms, as well as Nataly Portman and Saoirse Ronan who have 3 noms a piece, have reinvented their acting if they are going to be worthy of being nominated again this coming awards season. Don't get me wrong, I consider all of them to be among the best active actresses working in Hollywood today, however, I'd be peeved if the Academy continues to reward redundancy and virtually repetitious performances in some instances, while ignoring fresh, innovative and inventive performances from actors who have yet to receive their first nom.

I remember back then the haters were more than those who didn't care for her, but as you allude to, they made it their purpose to trash her everywhere. It was just over the top. Then for example, magazine forum mods knew the antics of those type haters and called them out on it.

I do miss the people from the IMDB forums and we were supposed to have more time before it shut down. But it closed faster than it was supposed to and we were still compiling forums to meet up on, like this one. Sadly, the shut down happened fast enough that many didn't get the info. Too bad as this forum is a good place to post and discuss actors and movies.

For this reason I would like to thank you again, Ron, for the private messages along with the emails you sent me, giving me the heads up on the shutting down of the IMDb boards as well as possible movie forums that we could migrate to thereafter. I'm not a fan of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc., for various reasons, so thank goodness for MovieChat. I sometimes cross paths with former IMDb member fans of Kristen on my YouTube channel, so if I recognize them by their user names, I'll be sure to let them know about this place.

I sure do miss conversing with Cori John, Soiled Dove, Austin Yearwood, Maria Hossain, Recessionista, Grouchyoscar, Siluro, CTK80, MMitchell, Dan Pivalwil, WLP325, Siluro and Drunken Cowboy--how could anyone forget DC, hahaha?

Lots of fan names there LL! Maybe not all fans but most and we had a lot of great discussions. :) Thanks for the reminders of those names.

Weren't all of them fans, Ron? Perhaps my memory isn't serving me well these days, hehehe.

LL, I think all that you mentioned were fans. Not sure why I added "not all fans". Too bad we don't have more of them on this discussion board. :)

Yeah it's been a while since she got top 50 but i think by the time the movie is released she will be in top 10 for multiple reasons
The movie promo will be on max also AAE would have premiered in Venice as it is expected and we probably got the first trailer for UNDERWATER so yeah in few month she will be on top of IMDB again.

It always make me laugh when people say she will be over after twilight and she proved them wrong

Agreed Mody, in that Kristen being ranked in the top 10 around the time of CA's release is certainly within the realm of possibility, as all the lead actors along with the director are currently ranked pretty high on the IMDb STARmeter even though the film won't be released for another 4 months. For example, Ella Balinska, who is still a relative unknown, is #55. Elizabeth Banks is #18. And perhaps the biggest surprise is Naomi Scott, who is #3--although her being one of the main stars in Aladdin contributed to this high ranking.

Another huge surprise is, as far as films go, is that CA is #3, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5033998/?ref_=nv_sr_1?ref_=nv_sr_1
with only the two highest grossing films this week at the box office, "Toy Story 4" and "Spider-Man: Far From Home" which are currently #1 and #2 respectively, ranked higher.

So much for expressions I've come across on various forums and sites such as, "No one wants to see another 'Charlie's Angels' reboot as the series has already been overdone,'" as obviously there appears to be a huge interest in this film along with its lead actors. Perhaps there are millions of moviegoers in search of action oriented alternatives to the multibillion-dollar film franchises currently being churned out by Marvel and DC.

reply

Yeah agree i feel like by the time the movie is released the whole cast will be high. And yeah the movie might reach #1.

The main catch of this movie is the cast, people are intrigued to see this cast and to see Kristen being of the Angels. But yeah the forums weren't kind to it and comments aren't either but hopefully the movie does well.

Yeah, I liked the previous Charlie's Angels TV show and movies, and I like that story so I hope this does well at the box office. I think the biggest thing is if the story is written well and I like how the CA world has been expanded.

Being a longtime fan of Kristen is a definite plus and I've been a fan of Elizabeth Banks ever since I saw her in The Next Three Days back in 2011, a truly underrated performance I might add. I believe Naomi Scott has tremendous upside and a lot of potential and judging by the trailer, Ella Balinska could very well have a bright future starring in action, horror and thriller genre movies. For myself, the lead actors alone is enough of a reason to go watch this film in a theater. But for those who aren't huge fans of the aforementioned or of Charlie's Angels, it may require more.

While these actors and director should attract interest and bring in moviegoers, I believe we live in a day and age where casting A-listers, in and of itself isn't enough to ensure the film will make money. Even the biggest bankable box office draws of Hollywood today, at times star in films that do not do very well at the box office. For example, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's "Fighting With My Family" flopped. So did Chris Hemsworth's "In the Heart of the Sea" and Robert Downey, Jr.'s "The Judge". Having Denzel Washington attached to a project virtually guarantees it will earn back its production budget and marketing costs, yet his film "Roman J. Israel, Esq.", did not. Heck, Keanu Reeves' sci-fi thriller "Replicas" made less than some of Kristen's low budget indies. Even Leonardo Dicaprio, who only seems to want to star in the most Oscar-baity of films over the past several years, sometimes cannot draw crowds, as he failed to do in "J. Edgar". And Johnny Depp, one of Ron's and my all-time faves, has become hit and miss in terms of how much his films earn.

So having good acting talent is just part of the formula for success. A great storyline, engrossing subject matter, a built-in audience, and building a good team of talent around the project, are all integral to how well a film does at the box office. So thus I'm hoping when they release the next trailer, without spoiling the film, I'm hoping they let the audience in on how great of a story and subject matter moviegoers can come to expect, and whether it will more closely resemble the film franchise or the TV series upon which the films were based upon. Judging by the trailer, it appears to touch on some social issues, such as corruption among political leaders and wealthy individuals, but the extent to how corrupt they really are remains largely ambiguous. Remember, the heroes and heroines in a movie are only deemed as strong and resolute as the ones they go up against. Sure, this film should be predominantly a fun popcorn flick, filled with humor and action, yet I believe it should still have a strong moral premise, what the film is really about, at its core. In other words, a second trailer revealing more in terms of style and substance. All films in this genre, not necessarily in as large or grand of a scale, should strive to imitate films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who have perfected the recipe for box office success.

reply

Yeah you are it's no longer star power that drive the box office. Hopefully another trailer spark more interest and if it gets positive reviews that will help it also. We will have to wait and see.

I can see both Naomi and Ella going places. Naomi would most certainly will reprise her role as Jasmine for Aladdin 2 and Ella already has a horror movie coming out.

reply

Ditto, Mody. Jason Blum, of Blumhouse Productions, the production company which has churned out some of the most popular and successful low budget horror films of the last decade, will produce Run Sweetheart Run. So if Ella nails the role, along with wowing audiences in her starring role in CA, this should put her on the map.

While Aladdin received mixed reviews among critics, currently 56% on Rotten Tomatoes, it should be noted that some top critics such as Richard Roeper praised Naomi's performance. And what will contribute to making her a household name, if she isn't one already, is her universal appeal. Aladdin has a 94% audience score on RT, an audience grade of A on Cinema Score and a 90% audience approval rating on Post Track, which I believe in large part should be credited to the lead actors including Naomi. While Kristen has become somewhat of a critics darling for her performances in critically acclaimed independent feature films, Naomi is fast becoming a darling to mainstream moviegoers far and wide.

Hopefully, with a trio of beautiful and talented leads such as this, it will translate to CA becoming both critically and commercially successful.

reply

Make that #44 on the IMDb Starmeter this week. Not bad at all for an actress who stars in mostly small budget indies.

"Not bad at all for an actress who stars in mostly small budget indies. "

Yep, not too bad.

Charlie's Angels lead actors:
Naomi Scott is currently #12 on the IMDb Starmeter
Kristen Stewart is currently #16 on the IMDb Starmeter
Ella Balinska is currently #22 on the IMDb Starmeter

Ford V Ferrari lead actors:
Christian Bale is currently #35 on the IMDb Starmeter
Caitriona Balfe is currently #45 on the IMDb Starmeter
Matt Damon is currently #93 on the IMDb Starmeter

The reason why I cite this is because many on the Charlie's Angels board here on MovieChat are erroneously claiming that moviegoers are much more interested in watching Christian Bale and Matt Damon perform in a movie as opposed to watching Kristen Stewart and Naomi Scott. IMDb is currently ranked #3 in the world when it comes to internet traffic for "Arts and Entertainment". And 30.6% of all of IMDb's traffic originates from the United States.

And what about YouTube, which accounts for a whopping 11.4% of all global internet traffic! The official Charlie's Angels trailer currently has 18.3 million views, which is nearly triple the amount of views as the official Ford V Ferrari trailer which has 6.9 million views.

Without question, interest in Charlie's Angels and the lead actors in this film is huge. So I'm shocked as to why, despite all the interest, it did so poorly at the box office here in the U.S.

reply

Charlie's Angels is currently the #2 movie on IMDb in terms of "Popularity". All three leads are now in the top 10 (I edited my OP to update this):

Naomi Scott is currently #4 on the IMDb STARmeter
Ella Balinska is currently #6 on the IMDb STARmeter
Kristen Stewart is currently #8 on the IMDB STARmeter

Again for emphasis, with the popularity of the movie Charlie's Angels and its stars on the rise on IMDb, one wonders why this film isn't doing better at the box office.

reply

Yeah, given that news it adds to it being a bit unusual that CA hasn't done well at the BO. The movie is a new take on expanding the CA story line, good cast and a fun, fast moving movie.

reply

The last time Kristen was ranked that high on the IMDb STARmeter, her movies (i.e., Breaking Dawn - Part 2, Snow White and the Huntsman) were raking in hundreds of millions of dollars.

reply

I was never a fan of hers early on because she's been working in the industry since she was eight, but during her Twilight years, you could not look tell this about her by looking at these films. But she's come a long way and she's honestly improved a lot - she's quite a competent actress. She was probably the best thing about the recent Charlie's Angels movie, and I say this as someone who has never been impressed with her in the past.

So, congratulations, K-Stew.

reply

Wint, I agree with you on her CA role. I feel that she played the part well, was very animated and entertaining with good comedy relief.

reply

Agreed Ron. For those who insist that Kristen can't play a comedic role, I'm guessing they haven't watched her in CA or in her latest guest host appearance on Saturday Night Live. I mean if Kristen didn't have it in her, why on earth did SNL use her as guest host twice in less than two years?

reply

She was so funny on SNL. Incredibly funny. She has really improved, no one can deny her that.

reply

Of course Kristen is primarily know for being a dramatic actress--but it certainly doesn't hurt to have comedic talent in her arsenal. So I'm hoping she gets a dark comedy role in the future as I believe she would excel in such a role.
