P.S. RIP Miami Dolphins' 2018 season. Boy, were they awful (even though they did beat Ron's Patriots a few week ago).

reply

Thanks Carved. I'm always liking Scars on 45, a group you made me aware of. ;)

reply

You're welcome, Ron.
I'm glad I turned you into a fan of Scars on 45.
Btw, I made that music video of their song, Runaway.

Meanwhile, I've got to add how much I like Jeff Beck's take on Nessun Dorma, a song I first heard on Three Tenors. His guitar playing absolutely amazes me.

reply

pretty shitty selection of music as a gift how generous of you

reply

Nah, lots of good stuff there including oldies. But if you don't like, that's ok. Each to his/her own tastes in music. :)

reply

All I can say is, in my opinion, all the songs currently on the Billboard 100 cannot hold a candle to any of the songs on Carved's mixtape. I know, again, according to my own taste and preferences in music, because I listened to every single one of those Billboard listed songs, some painstakingly, as I was desperately searching for a song for my latest Kristen music video.

Like a godsend, my choice became all too easy after watching the wedding scene from the film "Crazy Rich Asians", with Kina Grannis' cover of Can't Help Falling In Love resonating in the background, which I must say took my breath away. So I decided on using a variation of Grannis' cover to accompany clips of Kristen's character Bella Swan from Breaking Dawn - Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CZjWpE827Q

While I understand why Carved may be throwing fits at my mere mention of Twilight, yet even he must admit that she was absolutely gorgeous and a sight to behold in BD-1--especially during Bella & Edward's wedding scene.

reply

Oh God, how I hate the Twilight Saga (except, of course, for the last 45 minutes of BD-2, as that's a really cool battle).

Anyway, thanks for the kind words re my music choices, Ron & LL.

And now to continue this music thread, I bring you one of my newest cds, a cd titled, This Weekend, We Rock Portland.
The disc contains 22 songs, half by The Replacements (who I saw on their final tour) and half by Paul Westerberg, from his
post-Replacements solo career.

Btw, I stole the title from a line in the Cameron Crowe film, 'Singles'. In it, Matt Dillon plays the lead singer of a band known as Citizen Dick. Other members of the band are Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament.
Here's the scene ... https://youtu.be/qQuNdPS5Qco

And here's the cd ...

reply

Carved, thanks again for showing me more artists that I wasn't familiar with before. Maybe they aren't as much in the usual circles on the radio stations. While not a big music listener all the time I tend to listen more to Sirius radio where I get more diverse artists/music, a change from the usual music stations.

reply

You should pick up an album from The Replacements, probably Let It Be or Tim. Those are the apex.

reply

Good to know. :)

reply

Seems like it would go perfect as an accompaniment to a meal of plain lettuce and water.

reply

P.S. RIP Miami Dolphins' 2018 season. Boy, were they awful (even though they did beat Ron's Patriots a few week ago).

I'm still in shock and disbelief, I mean this in a good way, that the Patriots beat the Chiefs on the road in the AFC Championship, as they were underdogs and many counted them out. After New England lost to the Eagles in last year's Super Bowl, I thought the top NFC teams, especially the Saints and Rams, would be head and shoulders above the best the AFC had to offer this season. I mean, the Patriots lost to 3 teams with losing records (i.e., Jaguars, Lions, Dolphins) and 2 more teams that didn't make the playoffs (i.e., Steelers, Titans) during the regular season. And yet here we are with the Patriots currently being favored to win Super Bowl LIII according to Sports Line's advanced computer model. With all the roster changes, I thought they were in major rebuild mode--yet with Belichick at the helm and retaining their key, core and clutch players such as Brady, Edelman and Gronkowski, all of whom are relatively healthy, I now feel rather foolish, doubting they would get this far this year. But of course there's still one more game to go--this one for all the marbles. If Brady leads them to victory, this should remove all doubt that he is the GOAT and that the Patriots dynasty is alive and well.

reply

LL, I'm also a bit surprised that the Pats won against first the Chargers then the Chiefs. They had been inconsistent in the last few regular season games and I worried about the defense. But the defense came on strong and the offense did also. But then, I shouldn't be too surprised as the Patriots under Belichick and the rest of the coaching staff have done so much so well. Then Brady can never be counted out but also the team around him deserves huge credit in the same way.

reply

That was very cool of you. Your colleagues are lucky ducks!

reply

Thank you, TexasJack. That was very kind of you to say so.
And I must add that all six who received that little gift liked the songs and the segues linking them a lot.

reply

OK, time for some more music.

I have made an Executive Decision, so each and every day, I shall post a music video until we get a definitive answer as to when Underwater will hit the big screen.

And since I am a huge Springsteen fan, I shall start this endeavor with cover versions of some of his songs as well as Bruce doing cover versions of other people's songs. This start will take well over a month.

So here for your listening pleasure is Joe Grushecky and The Houserockers doing a cover of Light of Day, the song that Bruce wrote for Joan Jett to use in the movie of the same name.
https://youtu.be/Td0ggfZ1ohk

Oh how I would have loved it had this song been included at the end of The Runaways. That film could have shown Joan going on to be in a movie, thus we could have heard Kristen singing it.

reply

That's a cool bit of trivia CK. :) And yes, it would have been nice if the song had been included in The Runaways movie. As it was though, Kristen, Dakota, Scout, Stella Maeve did a great job with the music in that movie! Especially the singing by Kristen and Dakota.

reply

For today's tune, I'm going to link to two completely different covers of the same song, namely, Reason to Believe.
This song originally appeared Springsteen's 1982 Nebraska album, which was the solo acoustic album he recorded at home.

First, here's Aimee Mann and Michael Penn's version. This was released on a tribute album to 'Nebraska' titled, 'Badlands,' where various artists recorded covers of all the songs on the album. Aimee was first known as the singer from the group, 'Til Tuesday, and Michael is Sean Penn's brother. Sean, of course, directed Kristen in 'Into the Wild.' Oh yeah, Michael and Aimee are husband and wife.
https://youtu.be/4QhLXzDg4F8

And here's an earlier cover of Reason to Believe by The Beat Farmers, which was recorded back in 1985. This one really rocks.
https://youtu.be/_MTKoob-XUs

reply

Now it's time for a change. Instead of giving you a cover of a Springsteen song, I'm going to post an Elvis tune that Bruce covered.
That being said, I am not going to reveal the song's name.

I will however first post a hint -- yup, here's a short video taking us back in time to where it all began ...
https://youtu.be/AsGHZHkOdmM ;-)

OK, think you know which song I'm talking about?

Get ready, because it's now time to ROCK!
Sing it, Bruce - https://youtu.be/Hy980HHKHPo

Meanwhile, I wonder who those two guys were standing on either side of Kristen.
My guess, judging by the facial resemblance, is that the guy on the right (Kristen's left) is her biological brother.
As for the other one ... one of her adopted brothers, perhaps?

I would agree Carved, that the one on the right sure appears to be Cameron Stewart. However, in my opinion, the one on the left doesn't look at all like Taylor or Dana, in terms of build and facial features.

Since we're on the topic of Kristen's bit part as the "Ring Toss Girl" in The Flintstones In Viva Rock Vegas, even though it was just an uncredited role, why did the filmmaker choose to only show the back of her head instead of showing her face--considering she would one day become one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood--let alone one of the faces of haute couture fashion house Chanel?

reply

LL, I confess to having no clue as to what Kristen's adopted brothers look like. I didn't even know their names for that matter.

As to your question regarding only seeing the back of Kristen's head, I'm sorry, but I find that one a bit unfair. I mean, you're asking a question based on what we know now and not what was true back then.

Please remember that back when The Flintstones In Viva Rock Vegas was filmed, all Kristen was, besides being adorably cute, was that she was the daughter of the film's script supervisor. She had never been in a film before. She was on set only because her Mom used to bring her to work. All she did was be an extra, who was onscreen for seven or eight seconds, in a scene that was probably shot by the film's second unit director.

reply

Nah, Kristen's ring toss scene made that movie great! ;) :)

I've seen Kristen's brothers a few times, usually in photos with Kristen, though I have to look up info to remember names. She has a few times talked about her brothers and they seem to be very close. Two adopted brothers. Her biological brother Cameron works on sets for movies and had a role in K-11 that his and Kristen's mom Jules directed. Kristen had an off screen role as a secretary or other person on a phone call. But you guys know this, just refreshing mine and other's memories.

reply

Good morning and welcome to Super Bowl Sunday!

Like yesterday, today's cover will be one that Bruce does. I dedicate it to The New Orleans Saints and their fans, for had it not been for one of the worst missed Pass Interference calls in football history, the Saints would have been playing in this evening's game against Ron's Patriots instead of The Los Angeles Rams.

So here, for your listening pleasure, is ...
When the Saints Go Marching In - https://youtu.be/aff_zv76sCY

Btw, this somewhat somber version of the song was recorded at a concert that took place in New Orleans at The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on April 30, 2006, approximately seven and a half months after Hurricane Katrina ravaged NOLA. This was the first actual concert on the 'Seeger Sessions' tour (not counting the rehearsal shows in Asbury Park, NJ), and took place six days after Bruce's 'We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions' cd was released. That cd is a collection of 13 old, classic, American folk songs, and was sort of an homage to Pete Seeger. Some of the songs included are: 'Old Dan Tucker,' 'John Henry,' 'Erie Canal,' 'Shenandoah' and of course, Seeger's 'We Shall Overcome'. Bruce's backing band for the album and the tour was known as The Seeger Sessions Band. None of the members of The E Street Band, with the exception of Bruce's wife, Patti Scialfa, were part of The Seeger Sessions Band.

OK, that's it for today. Enjoy the game.

P.S. Today's Quiz: Can you name all of Kristen's movies that were filmed, all or in part, in New Orleans or vicinity?

reply

Thanks CK, very nice version of the song. Also, given the questions over the missed call in the Saints' playoff game it kinda seems appropriate, eh?

Enjoy the game!

reply

I am having a hard time saying, "Congrats on the win," Ron, because that was one of the most boring Super Bowls ever.
That being said, it was at least nice to see how well prepared the Patriots defense was, since their Defensive Coordinator is about to become the Miami Dolphins' new head coach.

So here's a tune that feels appropriate for today, namely Dave Edmunds' cover of Springsteen's
From Small Things (Big Things Come) - https://youtu.be/cq6TwUJ25zs

I hope that the title of the song will eventually be the case for the 'Fins. I know that that will not be the case for next season because reports are that Ryan Tannehill will be released, the team will not go after any high priced, quality free agents and that they will basically try to tank next season so that they can get the first or second pick in the 2020 draft in order to get that Alabama quarterback. In addition, I've already made the prediction that they will try and trade out of the first round of this year's draft in order to stock pile more high round picks in the following year's draft.

PS. OK, I feel better now. I just listened to the song and have finally woken up. Man, that version really gets my blood flowing.

reply

CK, the game was a defensive grind, which I like in games also. Both teams' defenses played great and that can make for an impressive game also. But I know, we all want to see great offensive plays more so. But I was getting very nervous at how the Patriots were gaining much yardage but failing to score.

So Miami is getting a great new coach with the Pats former defensive coach. But he did put together a great defensive game plan that held back the powerful offense of the Rams to just three points. That's a huge effort by the Patriot defense but the Rams defense was just as tough.

reply

That defense wins championships, one of most common sayings in sports, became true in an era where many are now saying that offense is the future of the NFL. I'm amazed that just a year ago, basically the same defense that got manhandled by the Eagles in Super Bowl LII, absolutely shut down the second highest scoring team in the NFL yesterday and contained the top scoring team in the AFC Championship. If someone told me that this would be the lowest scoring Super Bowl in history before the game, I would have dismissed this person as ignorant, even crazy. Simply unbelievable defensive performance by the Patriots!

reply

LL, before the game I was thinking that it would be a high scoring game, given the offenses of both teams. I didn't imagine that each team's defense would shut down the other, especially effective being the Pats defense. I found that an exciting game of defense, yet it was called by some a boring game due to such low scoring. But I think that overlooks the amazing efforts by defenses, which is often what wins games.

I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of the ones who called Super Bowl LIII boring were fans of neither team, Ron. For a true Patriots fan, a win is a win regardless of the score, and exciting nonetheless, just as anyone who has skin in any game or a horse in any race so to speak, as he has something at stake. Of course, to be perfectly honest, if I wasn't a Patriots fan, I probably would not have found the game exciting unless it had lots of offensive fireworks.

You are quite likely correct on that. People want to see a lot of scoring but that's only half the game.

If there's any consolation, Carved, this game wasn't just for fans of defense, but also for niche special teams fans, more specifically, those who love watching extraordinary punting performances--perhaps the best punting in Super Bowl history, I might add.

reply

But people don't pay very high prices for tickets just to see punting, LL.

Anyway, today's tune comes from none other than The Band, with a somewhat surprising cover of Springsteens' ...

reply

As we continue to wait for any news regarding 'Underwater,' today's musical selection will be Bruce doing a live cover of a song that LL used for one of his Kristen music videos.

You see, way back last century, Bruce would do this one and dedicate it to Julianne Phillips, whom he had just married ...
Can't Help Falling In Love - https://youtu.be/97aynuD4iYI

Sadly, that marriage didn't last much longer than the song.

reply

Can't Help Falling In Love - https://youtu.be/97aynuD4iYI

I used to know a young woman named Julianne Phillips--so it comes as a bit of a surprise that one of The Boss' former wives had the same name.

reply

Actually LL, Julianne Phillips is not one of Bruce's former wives, she is his only former wife.
Bruce would later marry Patti Scialfa, who was and still is a singer in The E Street Band. Bruce and Patti are still married and have three children.

But it is kinda funny that you used to know someone with the same name.

So because of that, today's song will be Bruce and the band doing a cover of Sentimental Journey. This occurred during a radio show in Houston, Tx., way back in 1974. This one's an instrumental.

Well, well, well, whatdya know?

As we impatiently wait for some news regarding 'Underwater,' a photo showing three angels and their boss was released yesterday by the boss herself.

So speaking of the angels' boss, here's a cover of one of The Boss' songs by a group called Camera Obscura. I chose this particular song because that photo of Kristen with Ella, Naomi and Elizabeth sure made me think that Kristen was ...

Wages of Sin - https://youtu.be/XXpIheVD2JE

After all, it was a sin regarding what the FBI tried to do to Jean Seberg.

reply

I don't think I've heard of that duo from Bruce before this. Is he still creating new music? I kind of lost touch with what he's been up to.

reply

Ron, yes, Bruce is still creating new music, however, for the past year and a quarter, he was quite busy with something else.

You see, from October 3, 2017 until December 15, 2018 Bruce was doing his solo 'Springsteen on Broadway' show at the Walter Kerr Theater in Manhattan. In December, a two disc cd of the music and stories contained in the show was released. In addition, a video of the show was released on Netflix, where it is still available for viewing.

Bruce won a special Tony Award for the show, which means he has now won an Oscar, a Tony and many, many Grammys.

As for what's happening this year, he'll soon be heading back to the studio to record another album with the E Street Band. Then he will supposedly tour with the band in 2020.

Oh yeah, there's also a rumor that he has already completed a solo acoustic album as well.

So to honor Bruce's time on the Broadway stage, I do believe it's time to "Boogaloo down Broadway" with Pete Yorn's cover of
New York City Serenade - https://youtu.be/gdgWp9GptGg

reply

[deleted]

Still no news regarding the theatrical release date for 'Underwater,' eh?

That's OK, because I've still got a gazillion more cover songs to post.

Today's tune is an old Bee Gee's song that Bruce opened his Australian concerts with a few years back. I chose this one because the title perfectly sums up what Kristen and her cohorts will try to do during their time underwater.

Hehe, CK that's a pretty good version of that song!

reply

Yeah, I know Ron.

That's just one of the great things about a Springsteen concert -- you never know what surprises may pop up.

Case in point, the first time I saw Bruce and The E Street Band live, they did a cover of a classic Animals tune that blew me away.
It's My Life - https://youtu.be/IKIIuI3wGqU

No one seems to bring the pathos to a song like Bruce does.

Next up on the cover parade is Joe Cocker doing the title song of one of the two Springsteen cds that were released on the very same day in 1992.

Human Touch - https://youtu.be/yTlkqVxvw-I

P.S. I see that IMDb has changed 'Against All Enemies' classification from post-production to completed.
And now we wait and see if the film does indeed have its world premiere at Cannes as I predicted.

reply

In honor of this being February 14th, I have decided to post not one, not two but three covers of Bruce Springsteen songs.

The first, by a group known as Lucky 7, is being linked to since the song has a very appropriate title for today's date ...
Valentine's Day - https://youtu.be/xGA0eLkgxKk

Next up is a music video I made just the other day. This song is a collaboration of two groups, Mrs. Fun and Tina & The B-Side Movement, both of whom I had never heard of until I bought the 'One Step Up/Two Steps Back' tribute cd where this version can be found. The name of the second group is kind of appropriate, as this song had only been released as the B side to one of Bruce's singles, until it finally was released as part of the four disc 'Tracks' collection, which was the collection of a whole bunch of songs that had been recorded over the years but never released.

Anyway, here's ... Janey, Don't You Lose Heart - https://youtu.be/CU6cWOQeqV4

Finally, here's Mark Wright doing a cover of one of the songs from 'The River' double album, namely ...
Two Hearts - https://youtu.be/Zc0Q81jhSWI

Btw, one of Springsteen's songs from 'Tracks' was actually included in one of her films! Yup, I'm talking about the song 'Iceman,' which was used in the scene where Kristen kisses Adam Brody in In the Land of Women.
Here's the poster using the screenshot of said kiss ... https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0419843/mediaviewer/rm3266716160

Uh, anyone feel like dancing?

If so, here's Amy Macdonald's cover of Dancing In the Dark ...
https://youtu.be/xQGmyOgnXsQ

Man, it's funny how the original music video of that song brought a certain actress to the attention of the MTV viewing world, since it was none other than a very young Courtney Cox, future star of 'Friends,' whom Bruce pulls onstage and dances with. Hard to believe that that was 35 years ago.
https://youtu.be/129kuDCQtHs

reply

CK, I love that version of Dancing In the Dark that Amy sings! She has a very nice sounding singing voice.

reply

Now for a bit of a surprise. Like all touring musicians, Bruce and the E Streeters do a soundcheck prior to a concert.
This particular song is a cover of a 1958 song by Ed Townsend which was played as part of the soundcheck during the 1988 tour for Bruce's 'Tunnel of Love' album.
Apparently, some "paying customers" were let into Madison Square Garden a bit early, thus they got to hear it.
It has now been released as part of the concert cd for that show, which I think is very cool.
For Your Love - https://youtu.be/QcJwrQnC1u0

Today's cover takes place at Barclay's Center in Brooklyn N.Y. in 2016. Bruce and the band played this shortly after Prince passed away.

Very nice CK. I especially like For Your Love

reply

Yeah, I also like that one a lot as well, Ron.

And now I do believe it's time for a little Eddie Vedder. Eddie, of course, wrote and performed the original songs for 'Into the Wild,' the film which, although Kristen had a small role, proved to be quite important to her career.

So here's Eddie performing My City of Ruins at the Kennedy Center Honors Bruce Springsteen. Must be nice to sit next to the President and the First Lady.
(As long as the President is not that a-hole Trump, that is.)
https://youtu.be/CvMFdAtsRTg

Btw, Bruce actually wrote this song for Asbury Park, NJ, but then he played it as the opening song for the telethon to aid the victims and their families of 9/11, thus it has been linked to that awful tragedy ever since.

reply

CK, you have a good knowledge and appreciation for music, that's for sure. :)

reply

Thanks, Ron.

Time for a little change in this Waitin' for 'Underwater' thread ...
I have decided to institute Two for Tuesday, just like radio stations used to do.

During the Born to Run tour back in '75, Bruce used to do a cover version of Manfred Mann's 'Pretty Flamingo' (a song MM originally recorded in 1966) complete with a humorous introductory story.
https://youtu.be/c8q2r0tYkRc

One year later, Manfred Mann's Earth Band released their 'Blinded By the Light' single, which was a cover of a Springsteen song from his very first album, Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.
The song had been shortened to 3:49 for radio play (it did very well as a single), but they also released the complete version on their album. Here are both versions ...

But man, I ain't buying that

OK, now it's time to really rock a cover!
Here's Bruce in Berlin, East Germany back in the summer of 1988. Notice how the young crowd is having an absolute great time.
One year later, that effin' wall would come a tumblin' down.

In East Berlin 1988, that's amazing. Just a year or two before the wall came down.

It's Friday, so welcome to the weekend!

As we continue to patiently wait for a smidgen of news regarding 'Underwater,' my litany of cover songs continues with Bruce and the band playing a 1966 pop hit from an Australian band known as The Easybeats. I chose this one because it has a very appropriate title for this particular day of the week as well as the fact that Kristen is half Australian. Naturally, this is from a 2014 concert in Sydney, Australia.

So here's ... Friday On My Mind - https://youtu.be/iMMpSiG57Zo

As our weekend continues, today's cover of a Springsteen song comes from a group known as Vampire Weekend!
Have no fear though, for despite the name, I assure you, these guys' skin ain't sparkly. ;-)
Anyway, here's their version of ... I'm Going Down - https://youtu.be/CZUMEIHLwGs

Carved, I just downloaded some more music onto my iPod, including some of the artists you've posted. Paul Westerberg and The Replacements. :) I also dloaded some Neil Diamond, one of my all time favorite singers; amazing that I didn't have much of his before. Lana del Ray who is newer to me and a few oldies from Waylon Jennings. Also need to get more of Springsteen.

Good to hear that you've downloaded some Replacements/Westerberg songs, Ron.
As for Neil Diamond, I sure hope that you've got his live version of 'Solitary Man' from his Hot August Night album. That one is definitely my favorite song of his. https://youtu.be/BnHuaq-RoVo

Be that as it may, it's time to continue with cover songs on this Oscar weekend.
And speaking of Oscars, I suppose it's only appropriate that I post Richie Havens' cover of the song that Bruce won his Academy Award for.
So here's ... Streets of Philadelphia - https://youtu.be/98PbGd4x9aI

Finally, using the Crystal Ball that I rightfully stole from a crooked fortune teller, I foresee Kristen walking down the red carpet 52 weeks from now as a nominee for Best Performance by a Lead Actress for her portrayal of Jean Seberg in 'Against All Enemies.'

Therefore (and since Ron mentioned the need to download more Springsteen songs) I do believe I shall close this post with a live version of another Bruce tune, namely ...
Be True - https://youtu.be/8y5bQaXhpMc (yes, I remain true to my Kristen fandom)

"Your scrapbook's filled with pictures
Of all your leading men
Oh baby don't put my picture
In there with them ..."

Carved, I certainly did download Solitary Man, probably from the Hot August Nights album as I got some songs from that album. And it is one of my favorites from Neil Diamond. He has so many favorites of mine.

"carpet 52 weeks from now as a nominee for Best Performance by a Lead Actress for her portrayal of Jean Seberg in 'Against All Enemies.'"

Her role certainly seems like one that would get much attention from award givers, but with so much competition and the seemingly odd selection process of Oscar voters you never know.
