Diane Kruger joins cast of JT Leroy - and Jim Sturgess too

I see that Diane Kruger has just joined the cast of JT Leroy and that the film is scheduled to go into production in July.

This from http://www.deadline.com/2017/05/diane-kruger-jt-leroy-movie-kristen-stewart-cast-1202095178/

So now we've got a cast that includes Kristen, Laura Dern and Diane Kruger.
Interesting, very interesting.

Note: See my post at the bottom regarding Jim Sturgess.

Reading the summary of this film in the link and it looks like such a fun story. Based on a real life story line.

While Diane Kruger is mostly know for her roles in National Treasure and Inglourious Basterds, in my opinion, her most riveting performance by far has to be in The Infiltrator where she plays an undercover narcotics officer starring opposite Oscar-nominated actor Bryan Cranston. She more than held her own and had undeniable chemistry with Cranston.

So this is very welcome news indeed that Kruger will now be starring with Kristen in a film based on real-life characters who lived double lives, since her role in The Infiltrator was also about a real-life character pretending to be someone else. Additionally, her portraying Kristen's character JT's love interest should be another huge plus. This could be one of those roles Kristen is perfectly cast in and was born to play. Can't wait to see Kristen, Kruger and Dern ratchet up the intensity in this film.

And Carved, if you can fill us in on how to convert words into italics like you did with the JT Leroy film title in your OP, that would be greatly appreciated. I tried using IMDb's method of bookending words with i and /i surrounding by [] which doesn't seem to work on this forum.

My intro to Diane Kruger was in Troy(2004) where she played Helen of Troy. All we need is for one day, Kristen does a movie with Orlando Bloom. So they both gossip about what it's like to "kiss" Diane Kruger on screen over a cup of coffee.

reply

They could also discuss what it's like to kiss a Victoria's Secret Angel.

LL, you can italicize words the same way we did over at IMDb.
You can also make words bold as well.

HOWEVER, and this is kind of weird, it seems that you can only do this once per post. If I were to italicize (or enbold) a second time in the same post, things would get messed up. I know this because I tried to do it.

The same probably happened to you if you tried to italicize the film titles, National Treasure, Inglorious Basterds and The Infiltrator in your above post.

Btw, underneath the gold "add reply" bar there is now a line in blue which says "formatting help." Clicking this line will show everyone how to do some things around here. Hopefully, in the not too distant future, the problem with trying to italicize words more than once in the same post will be fixed.

It really works Carved!

Thanks for also letting us know about "formatting help" which is similar to the "Markup Enabled" feature previously available on the now defunct IMDb message boards. Now all we really need are some emoticons.

"Jeremiah "Terminator" LeRoy is a literary persona created by American writer Laura Albert. After the first novel Sarah was published, Laura Albert started hiring her sister-in-law Savannah Knoop[1] to make public appearances as JT LeRoy. In a January 2006 article in The New York Times, LeRoy's agent, manager, movie producer, as well as several journalists, declared that the person acting as LeRoy in public was Savannah Knoop. Soon after, it was revealed that Laura Albert had written all of JT LeRoy's works, and had done all of the correspondence of "JT LeRoy," in email and on the phone in the voice of a damaged boy from West Virginia for over ten years.."

Here's the wiki story about who and what the JT Leroy story is about. Before this I had heard of Leroy or the phrase Leroy but didn't know what it was about. Should make for an entertaining movie. I think Kristen and the cast will have some fun with their characters. :)

Thanks for the link Ron--giving us some backstory on JT to whet our appetite for the film.

And now Jim Sturgess has also joined the cast ...

It's cool that they're already shooting some preliminary footage from this year's Cannes Film Festival to use at the end of the film.

This could be one interesting movie -- sure hope they get some decent distribution
(and by that I mean not IFC, because if it was IFC, the release would go something like this ...
first, a film festival or festivals in 2018,
then, a limited platform release in the spring of 2019).

Great news Carved. I must admit that I wanted James Franco, who is no longer part of the cast, to play the Geoffrey Knoop character, yet Jim Sturgess could be the next best thing. Enjoyed watching him in films such as Across the Universe, The Way Back, 21, Fifty Dead Men Walking, The Other Boleyn Girl, Crossing Over, Upside Down, Stonehearst Asylum and Cloud Atlas.

With the addition of Sturgess, the intensity exhibited by the main actors should be off the charts.

Thanks for that info Carved. Yes, I think this has a good chance of being a very entertaining movie with some great characters. :)

It appears as if the title for this film will be shortened to JT instead of JT Leroy: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DCUZ-RmWAAAoHkO.jpg

Also of note, this movie will be filmed in just one month, July 17 to August 17.

reply

Filming begins in one month, nice. Like I said, this should be a very entertaining film based on a true story. Kristen plays JT which is a fictional male character her sister creates. With a few others they continue and expand the hoax for about six years. Kristen will have a blast with this! :) Fun stuff. I had heard of JT Leroy before but never looked into who it was.

Well said Ron. Both the story as well as the character (Ms. Knoop/JT) she will be portraying appear to be very intriguing. First of all, Knoop seems to be a very complex character, one who lies and exploits others--but at the same time is intensely likeable, even to the many celebrities who were endeared to "his" "plight". As cheesy as it may sound, the protagonist must be likeable in one way or another in order to attract most moviegoers here in the US. So this could turn out to be one of the best, if not best character she has ever portrayed in a film not just from the perspective of this being a challenging role for Kristen but also that it will be more palatable to mainstream viewers liking if they find themselves empathizing with JT. Secondly, because her character is neither a goody two-shoes, nor the very epitome of evil, more of a mixed bag if you will, her role, if done right, will come across as more believable than if her character was a cliched archetype, two-dimensional cardboard cutout of a role. And lastly, her character could become a memorable one, as the audience may expect one thing at the outset of the film while being thrown for a loop the rest of the way as JT is not at all what "he" appears to be on the surface. Predictable storylines and characters are soon forgotten, while characters and stories that buck the trend and unceasingly amaze us live on forever.

LL, I've been aware that Kristen's next film will be called JT since the end of May.

It was during Kristen's interview with Anne Thompson for Come Swim that Kristen mentioned the new title of the film at the 14:45 mark of the YouTube video of said interview (see the thread I started regarding the interview).

I am truly looking forward to that film.

Oh, btw, I received my copy of Chloe Esposito's book, 'Mad' from Amazon the other day. Haven't started reading it yet. Will let you know when I do.

reply

I'm amazed you caught that Carved, as upon rewatching this video, despite forgetting that she mentioned JT instead of JT Leroy when talking about this film, I now recall that she said that upon further review.

Perhaps one reason why this was not forever burned in my cerebral cortex, begging to be recalled to conscious memory, was because in the past, actors sometimes refer to their projects in shorthand, even though the title of the film remains the same. In Kristen's case for example, she would often refer to Clouds of Sils Maria as "Sils Maria". Oh, scratch that from the record as Sils Maria is the appropriate title for this film in some territories.

Anyhow, I just thought of another reason why the JT character may turn out to be the best character she has ever portrayed in film: What I believe will make or break this film is the crucial scene where Ms. Knoop's true identity is revealed, which Kristen must nail in order to be remembered by current and future generations of moviegoers. When I think of the best characters to have ever graced the silver screen, characters such as Darth Vader and Batman come to mind. Why? Their unmasking and the dramatic way in which their true identities were revealed made them truly unforgettable. I'm hoping the same will be done with the JT character.
