The Rolling Stones Take Kristen Stewart For A Ride
Twilight actress stars in rock legends' new video
SIMON_HARPER NEWS 01 · 12 · 2016
It's a busy day for The Rolling Stones, who today officially release their new album, ‘Blue And Lonesome’, their first in over a decade.

A collection of covers of rare blues cuts, it was recorded over three days last December, and retains all the spontaneity and vitality of those impromput sessions - as Clash's review attests - wherein Jagger and co. fully cut loose in intimate settings with material by artists they clearly cherish.

Adding to the flurry of excitement around its release, the band have simultaneously dropped a video for one such track - their swaggering take on Eddie Taylor’s 1955 number, ‘Ride ’Em On Down’ (itself an update on Bukka White’s ‘Shake ’Em On Down’ from 1937) - starring alt. Hollywood icon, Kristen Stewart.

"It didn't take much more than a few words to get me amped on the idea," Stewart admits. "The Stones. A 65 mustang. Alone in Los Angeles. And the shoot was just as dreamy as the idea. We tore LA apart in a day and we had one hell of a sound track."

As we follow her cruising the golden streets of a seemingly post-apocalyptic LA (and cavorting at a gas station, as one does), Stewart’s intense smouldering attitude perfectly embodies the song’s poised assurance and blustering cool. “Seems like somebody’s gonna take my *beep* Jagger sings, as Stewart’s icy stare focuses.

She’s not the first actress to accept the offer a starring role for the Stones - in 1997, Angelina Jolie appeared in the video for ‘Anybody Seen My Baby?’, taken from that year’s ‘Bridges To Babylon’ LP.

Similarly brooding, as you can see in the exclusive stills above, Stewart here - dressed plainly, yet radiating pure edge - is more subtly subversive; a devil in blue jeans. We're sure the Stones would approve.

Directed by Francois Rousselet and shot by Newton Thomas Sigel, whose previous work includes Drive and Usual Suspects, the video is available to see here.

Kristen cruising down LA's streets in a classic Mustang elicited images of other actors being the epitome of cool driving 1960's model Ford Mustangs in films, such as Tom Cruise's '66 Mustang Shelby GT in War of the Worlds and '67 Mustang in Vanilla Sky, Lucas Black's '67 Mustang Fastback in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Nicholas Cage's '67 Mustang Shelby GT 500 in Gone in 60 Seconds, Kevin Costner's '68 Mustang Shelby convertible in Bull Durham, Steve McQueen's '68 Mustang GT fastback in Bullitt, Tania Mallet's '64-1/2 Mustang in Goldfinger, or Will Smith's late model '07 Mustang Shelby GT 500 in I am Legend.

This video also made me reminisce of John Travolta in Grease, not because of the classic ride he drove, which was a 1948 Ford De Luxe, but rather the racing scene in this film which took place along a concrete drainage ditch, fictitiously named "Thunder Road" in the film, which many claim is a drainage culvert connected to the LA River, which appears to be the same ditch that Kristen is shown doing burnouts, 180 degree spins as well as some hydroplaning.

It also made me regret my not accepting a '65 Mustang from my granduncle who was willing to part with it free of charge about a decade ago--for at the time I was into Chevy Camaro's as well as the import scene, namely Acura Integra's.

As you can imagine, all these memories of these film images come flooding into my brain, making my head spin, just like Kristen doing doughnuts with that Stang. I believe Kristen would be perfectly cast in a future installment of The Fast and the Furious film franchise because of the intensity she would bring to the role and because she definitely looks the part of a street racer. Thanks for posting Caroba!

Wow, that was great, such a much fun video! Very cool Stew.  I feel like I had almost as fun watching it as Kristen had making it. 

Loved the dancing at the gas station, and her other antics at the wheel of that very cool 65 'stang. Awesome car.

Who put a zebra walking along in LA? 

Do you need a bowman!?

The overwhelmingly positive response to this video clearly demonstrates that Kristen has a huge following on YouTube, for in just a couple of days it already has over 1.3 million views and over 35,000 likes.

While some may credit the Rolling Stones for all the hits this video is getting, if you notice in the comments section, the vast majority of the 600-plus comments are talking about Kristen--not about the Rolling Stones or their song.

BTW, I've watched your extensive review of BLLHW on your YouTube channel earlier today and thought it was excellent. You articulate just as well vocally as you do in written form.
