Greatest Rock bassist ever!

Better than Paul McCartney and John Entwistle who preceded him.
Better than contemporaries such as Mike Rutherford, Greg Lake, and John Wetton.
Better than Geddy Lee and Steve Harris who followed after him.

No, not everything he wrote or played on was a masterpiece.

But if you look at his overall body of work, and the number of other players he influenced, nobody else is within shouting distance!

Some of who you list are better. And I'd take John Paul Jones over him as well -- and maybe even Jack Bruce too if we're talking rock.

Les Claypool of Primus.
Billy Sheehan of Mr. Big.

In the rock world , I have to agree.
That aggressive Rickenbacker bass tone influenced everyone that proceeded him.And those incredible tunes he was a part of -holy shit!!
But the fusion guys like Jaco, Stanley, Percy Jones and Eberhard Weber got him beat though

reply

No way he's better than Geddy Lee.
