Black women who want an Oscar? Play a maid!

It works everytime. This is pathetic and degrading.

reply

Really? Only two black actresses have played maids and took home the Oscar. What are you talking about?

I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ-Gandhi

reply

This goes for other negative stereotypes such as subservient roles and criminals.

mick,i'm black and I could not agree with you more!

You want to play the game, you'd better know the rules, love.

I disagree.

Then you're not paying attention or you don't know any better.

How about Jennifer Hudson or Whoopi Goldberg or Halle Berry. They have all won Oscars and did not play a maid. Yes, Octavia Spencer won the Oscar for her portrayal of a maid, but unlike Hattie McDaniel (who also one for playing a maid) Octavia showed a different perspective on maids during that time. Minny, Octavia's character, was not docile, subservient, nor did she live to please her employers and but them above herself. I think she is a great actress and deserved her award.

She was a maid during a time when black people didn't have rights. That's a subservient role.

reply

Sorry but that's just ridiculous. By your logic any afro-american actor playing almost any character form the 17th century to the 19th century (and possibly up to the 50s or 60s) would be playing a subservient role.
