Why did Molly Shannon’s acting career never take off once she left SNL?

Her SNL spinoff film, Superstar, underperformed - If it had hit then we would have seen a lot more of Shannon in other film roles.

She's not “conventionally attractive” - She really can't be used for roles which require her to be a bombshell or “cheescake" and so that often limits her to supporting roles.

She was never a big box office draw - While she's done some voice work in some animated features, she was never in the kind of blockbuster that would have landed everyone involved in work for years to come.

Her next big foray into television bombed - Shannon starred with Selma Blair in a sitcom called Kath & Kim (Ever hear of it? Nobody has.) It lasted a grand total of 18 episodes. If that had done better, she would have done better.

She probably stayed on SNL too long - She was roughly 30 when she started on the show, and she remained for six seasons. Since she wasn't a major draw on the series, her hiatus dance card should have been filled with feature films. Although she did make some films, they didn't do well. She was still on SNL, which was a safe and secure job; however like Tim Meadows and Mark McKinney, she seems to have remained on the show too long, and suffered career damage as a result.
