Who was even aware he was a comedian?

Most people know he's that Fear Factor guy and from his awesome podcasts, maybe News Radio.

But when he sits around talking shop with comedians like he's one of the greats, I just have to laugh.

His stand up sucks.

reply

Yep, I loved his character on NewsRadio, but his stand-up isn't my thing.

Strange Times was surprisingly good

reply

Agreed - I'd say that strange times alone tells me he's got some definite skill. It was by far more physical than what most stand-up comedians do, but it was also truly hilarious.

I know him primarily through Fear Factor and his UFC commentary. But now I associate him more with the UFC and his podcast, although I don’t listen to his podcast, but I hear references to it very often. I tried to watch some of his standup comedy but I didn’t enjoy it at all, it seemed way too forced to me.

reply

I was aware. For a good while now. Don't really remember how, though. I must have stumbled on that on youtube.

I don't think Joe Rogan has any raw talent as a media personality. You can tell that he is driven by sheer will.

He reminds me a lot of Larry King and Tom Arnold. Both have zero presence and very little insight into anything

reply

Yeah i think he thinks he's in the same league as bill burr etc he clearly isn't !!!

reply

I don't think he thinks that. He's a humble guy.

But he does sell out stadiums like Bill Burr though not for as long as Burr has. It's weird since I could never get into his comedy either.

reply

I take your point, my comment was a bit harsh as i really enjoy his podcast ! I guess he's a decent enough stand up but i would say he's not a natural at it perhaps !

reply

I'd say his stand-up is legit. Bill Burr is pretty overrated. I've tried listening to his podcast.... and... basically, when he comes on talk shows, he pretty much does his scripted stand-up while sitting down in a conversation, appearing witty and funny, if you didn't know that he is basically just reading out the stuff he's written a year ago, but when he's not doing his scripted stuff.... he ain't that funny. Then again, I'd say the same thing for Joe (keep in mind, I've only seen his latest stand-up special) - his written stand-up is decent and his acting skill while doing stand-up is way above Bill's or most other comedians (yep, Joe does plenty of acting for various characters and stuff), but he ain't that funny during podcast.

Basically, I've seen people who are spontaneously funny and that all comes down to whether or not they have wit. Then there are people who are good at writing funny pieces, but in conversation, they don't have the wit to display their humor. Given enough time to write shit down, however, they can come off as damn hilarious - and that's basically Joe and Bill.

I see them as being very close, in the cold cruelty they spin their humor in. I really have a problem with someone who is a real jerk, but they can be funny, and so that is supposed to erase all their deficits and make you like them. I don't like people like that, and it seems sometimes to take some effort to not listen to them, like Trump. They say something mean and whip up a crowd of haters, with humor or some rhetorical trick. This is a dangerous strategy and we see where it has brought us in American in the last 4 years, and really even more going to back Reagan in the 80's.

Burr is funny, Rogan is clever, but I don't see them bound by any real strong morality ... maybe that is the bottom line for me.

He's better than Dane Cook.
