Her family is filing a wrongful death suit.

They say that the lake didn't warn people of the risks of swimming there. It's sad that the family is using her death to make money.

It's against the law in California to have a swimmer in the water without someone else (who is old enough) to operate the boat still onboard, plus another person to hold a flag to signal to other boats that people/ski equipment are in the water. So she was already breaking the law by stopping the boat and swimming with no one able to operate the boat.

Plus, at Lake Piru, swimming is only allowed at designated beach areas.

That said, it is California. So it wouldn't surprise me if the family won the lawsuit.

I hear she had alcohol in her system. This sounds like a case of a daily refusing to come to terms with a death.

reply

Not sure about that (the alcohol thing). Either way, it was a bad decision to jump in the lake with no one in the boat to come get her if the wind picked up....

reply

Well, that's the case right there. The family can sue the beer, booze or wine company for making her get drunk.

That's interesting. Makes sense.

Also how is a lake supposed to warn people

reply

People die of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning while swimming near pontoon boats. Look it up. I don't know if this young lady did.

Sad story.

Agreed. But they're not going to get any money off of work she *would* have done any more, so I get it too, but we do live in a sue-happy society.

I mean, that's the risk of swimming anywhere, period, especially if you can't touch the bottom with your head above. And coverage said the lake had a reputation, and she'd been there multiple times (so it's reasonable she might've known that), and she went without her life vest. It was a tragic accident, really no one to blame, it's just human nature to want to blame
