Michael Richards did nothing wrong

Fact

reply

I'm not a fan of the cult of "political correctness," but I think he could have expressed his frustration a bit differently.

reply

Of course he did. He had a bad set. Can't do that when you're famous.

reply

Kramer completely failed at managing a crowd, a skill that most competent stand ups develop.

reply

Yep

reply

At the very least he lost his temper, which is very wrong. I don't think he's a virulent racist, but losing his temper in such an odious manner cannot be written off. Forgiven, yes, but he certainly did something wrong. Hecklers are part of the territory. He should have dealt with them in a classier (and funnier) manner.

reply

Exactly. Like Silverman pointed out, he failed at managing the crowd, which is strategic for any skilled stand-up comedian. If he couldn't handle the heat, he shouldn't have gone into the kitchen.

reply

I agree. But there are different (not necessarily exclusive) charges that can be set to Richards. (1) That he's a bad stand-up comic, (2) that he lost his temper, and (3) that he's a racist.

I think (2) is basically indisputable. He's said as much and he doesn't look like somebody who's doing rage as a put-on for comic purposes (like a Bill Burr type thing). Number two is what I think he's very, very guilty of and he did express remorse for that.

The first charge is kinda what set him off, so I think (1) is probably true as well. Silverman's right: he shouldn't lose it like that, he should handle the crowd, and he should be in control - of himself at the very minimum. The hecklers said he wasn't funny and was washed up and he lost his temper because it was truth.

As to (3), maybe he is. I don't know. But I think he hollered out racist epithets because he wanted to hurt the hecklers as badly as they hurt him. It's possible he's racist, but I don't think he's a virulent racist. Put it this way: if Richards had some hangups or low-key prejudices, that wouldn't surprise me; a lot of people do. But it would surprise me if he refused to have interracial friendships or used that language in his private life.

reply

Good analysis.

Thanks!

But I think he hollered out racist epithets because he wanted to hurt the hecklers as badly as they hurt him.

This is most definitely a possibility as I've been guilty of that myself with an ex of mine. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

reply

All I'm going on is the short clip, but yeah, it seemed reasonable to me that somebody might do that out of pure rage. Get a person angry enough and they'll do really horrible things.

reply

This sounds pretty accurate. Did you ever see this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktZde2tEK1Y

reply

Yes! And it's awesome!

It's great that Richards agreed to do it, too, since it probably cut close to the bone. Also, JB Smoove and Richards are both masters! Very fitting to have them in the same scene since Leon is as close as Curb has to a Kramer type character.

reply

I agree. He could be racist, but I don't think so. I think he was just so upset, that he wanted to piss the heckler off and went straight to race. Funny thing is that it overshadowed the heckler being an asshole too.

reply

Oh, yeah, he definitely comes off as the jerk. The irony is that if he had held it together, finished his set, or actually ripped on the guy (asking the heckler what he did for a living probably wouldn't have stacked up to being on Seinfeld, so Richards would have had him dead to rights) and nobody would have even noticed.

reply

Yes, he did lose his temper, and it was wrong and damaging to him and his image and his life. I think he can be forgiven. I was happy to see him on "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and that Larry David gave him another chance. He is a comic actor, not exactly a comedian, and the pressure was too much for him.

Clearly you never saw his post-Seinfeld effort The Michael Richards Show...

reply

I think we can all agree on that one.

reply

I’ve never seen it but I think I saw somewhere that he originally wanted that to be a more serious detective show but the network basically wanted his new character to be like Kramer.

reply

then y is he in "entertainment exile??" he did get a raw deal.

reply

He was already in exile before the slur in 2006. He did nothing on screen for several years.

reply

Really, could not be bothered to spell out why?

reply

He never did or said anything deserving total professional cancellation. He's a talented actor/comedian and should still be working on television or in movies.

reply

But you did with your dog-whistling racist provocations. Engineer ... I doubt it.
