Is it pronounced 'day-viss' or 'day-veez'?

Welshmen, help me out! I've always wondered this, same goes for the Davies' in the Kinks. I suspect that the correct pronunciation is "day-viss", but most Americans aren't familiar with British dialects.

The only way I've only heard it pronounced is 'day-veez', to put it in your terms.

Aren't you clever!

The correct Welsh pronunciation of Davies is "Day-viss". Same goes for Ray Davies of the Kinks.

Most Welsh immigrants drop the 'e' to avoid people mispronouncing it.

I thought I heard one of his co-stars pronounce it "day-vees" in the Lord of the Rings commentary.

Thanks for the reply! I thought I had heard this, somewhere along the way.

I studied languages in college, though I never studied any of the Celtic languages, unfortunately. This sort of thing interests me.

My great-grandfather was Welsh, but the family name has been James for generations. and any of the heritage was left on the British shores.

No problem. I asked myself the same question recently when our music director introduced him to us as John Rhys-Davis. I'm thinking to myself "He sounds like an idiot, mispronouncing that guy's name to his face..." Then I looked it up, and found out Mack Wilberg did his homework before bringing our special guests artists in. (You can see his performance on the 2014 release of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas concert.)

Not surprised. Very few people know how to pronounce it correctly. And John is too much of a class act to correct everyone. Most people spell my name wrong, and I don't bother correcting them...
