FIRST?!?!?! WTF

Bad Witch is a fantastic album, a great follow-up to Add Violence.

Any other NIN fans around here?

Any other fans of Oscar winning film score composers around here?

The only NIN album I’ve listened to is The Downward Spiral, but it’s great.

Also love the Gone Girl score.

reply

You're missing out! If I was to recommend a second album to listen to, I would say The Slip. But theyre all great.

reply

You are me

reply

Yeah, like bit of NIN! Might love Trent Reznor, though. 😅

reply

He lives somewhere near me, it's a small city but even in 6 years here, I haven't had the pleasure of bumping into him.

reply

Now that you've said that, I bet it won't be long before you do. 😉

reply

I agree! Putting it out into the universe. Now I need to memorize his wife's name.

reply

I have no idea about his personal life but just googled her. Beautiful woman! Nice name too. Mariqueen. Can I girlcrush a bit now? 😊

reply

She's the lead singer and writer for Trents other project, How to Destroy Angels.

The songs are okay, but "The Loop Closes" is an amazing piece. It's basically a NIN track.

reply

I haven't heard that project yet. Will give it a try when I'm back on home turf, as I kind of need new music. In Prague right now.

reply

Great city! Nice party town, hot young women, historical churches.

My ancestry on my father's side comes from there. If you see anyone with the last name Ferenc, I might be related to them.

reply

Loving Prague so far. Went to the ossuary earlier for that unusual church experience, and just got back from the Thrill Park now. Don't want to spoil anything in case you visit the joint but that was a FANTASTIC experience and my adrenaline is pumping BIG TIME, but in a good happy way, not the usual aggressive way (for me, anyway). This horror themed thrill room thing is only a year old, and I was expecting something kibda cool but a bit lame. IT WAS ANYTHING BUT LAME.

I kind of want to live here and work there. I'm such a horror freak, I should! 🤣

I’m a fan of NIN. When I saw his profile on here I clicked on it to make sure he wasn’t dead. 90’s era musicians be dropping like flies.

reply

Perish the thought! Trent is immortal. Probably.

reply

For a while I wanted to make the first post here but... it never happened. Lol
(I figured by now there would be a bunch of whiny posts calling him out for being a cool dude and blasting a certain celebrity political figure, typical for this site.)

But yeah, big Reznor fan here. I like and love virtually every NIN release, and Bad Witch is no exception. While it’s very clearly influenced by David Bowie and others, its eerie sounds, cinematic quality (reminiscent of Trent’s own film work), and the addition of saxophone makes it a one of a kind NIN album. It’s a damn good listen.

And yes, I can say without a shadow of a doubt his film scores are outstanding. Huge fan of film composers in general.

I want to do Shit Mirror at karaoke... and I don't even like karaoke!

reply

Likewise. ;)

reply

Also great for karaoke:
Discipline
1,000,000
The Beginning of the End

reply

Nice picks. I’ll throw these to the mix:

Less Than
Starfuckers, Inc
Burn
Only
The Idea of You
Suck
Piggy
Survivalism
Closer (should be performed anywhere, anytime)

reply

Well yes Closer is a given (realistically most of his songs would be worth performing)... but this section you listed is powerful:

Suck
Piggy
Survivalism

Do all three in a row, in that order! As soon as I saw Suck, I started singing it in my head.

Also I finally designed my NIN/Futurama mashup shirt:

I was a huge NIN fan in high school, of everything up through The Fragile, and then kind of fell off from keeping up after that. I was a little surprised by all the Blackstar vibes sax and vibrato vox on Bad Witch! Lots of cool abstraction, especially on the second half... It's pretty dang nice. As always he's brilliant at sound design and production. Man it would be awesome if he did more and more abstract/non-rock stuff. I wanna see him go full Stockhausen.

reply

Yeah, he said that as he and Atticus were starting work on Bad Witch, Trent was looking at his saxophone off in the corner and regretted that he let it fall by the wayside instead of keeping up with practicing on it.

So, that motivated him to bring it back into this album. He also said he forgot he could sing (LOL), when talking about God Break Down The Door, as well as Over & Out, with his incredible Bowie impression.

I really love the sax "howling" in the background near the end of God/Door, I can't describe it musically very well, but it's a very short little element that probably gets lost without headphones on.

Unfortunately I've never bothered to see him live, but I know he sometimes does little intimate folding-chair shows around Los Angeles, basically like a show in a studio. My dream is to make it to one of those.

reply

I'd forgotten that he used to play sax and was in jazz band in hs right? Did he play the horn parts on the album? Does he play the sax parts live? Omg he should lol. He should bring back the tuba too! AND the violence of their 90s performances. Fukkin psychojazz.

reply

He does play all the sax on the album, not sure about live. Yessss I agree a NIN industrial jazz fusion album would be fuggin amazing.
