Deserves awards for her role as Alex in OITNB

I've always been a fan of her work in 'Orange', but I thought Laura was especially brilliant in season 3.

Hopefully, the Emmy, SAG & Golden Globe voters give her the nominations and awards she richly deserves. This season was a hell of a rollercoaster for Alex and I thought she was masterful in her portrayal.

I nominate her for the Worst Actress Ever award. She is terrible, and everything she does seems so inauthentic. Watching her, I never forget that she is reading from a script. Most of the time, when I watch any other actor on TV, I get lost in the actual show...you know, like you should when you're watching a show. Everything she says, I rerun the line in my head in a way that a real actor would. Seriously distracting.

Pretty much everyone else on the show is good, so she really sticks out and ruins every scene.

I personally think her line reading is----in Alex Vause's words---- mamazing 

But seriously......we can agree to disagree, but I think it's fair to say that acting isn't just line reading.

A famous acting coach once said "Acting is reacting", and I think Laura excels at the non-verbal aspect of it.

Take,  for example,  her work in the drama class scene in episode 3 of this current season of "Orange is the New Black". Her character (Alex) is listening to Piper's monologue about her reasons for getting Alex thrown back in prison. It's an emotional scene, and one that is very important to their story arc. Taylor Schilling does a really wonderful job,  but look at Laura's facial expressions and body posture,  and how they subtly change as the scene progresses. There is a good reason why the director choose to give her almost equal screen time,  despite the fact that she doesn't utter a single word.

This is just one example of her fine work in "Orange". I could list many more (and not just from this season) but acting style is a subjective thing. I actually debated the same topic on another site....and neither I nor my opponent were able to change each other's minds;  I applauded Laura's nuanced portrayal of Alex and the subtle things she does in scenes but the other person didn't see it that way... and that's fine.  Everyone is entitled to their opinion,  but they need to be able to back it up. I think that's only fair.

Sounds like you are describing the transgendered actress. She is terrible - brings the entire show down with her stilted acting. Prepon is ok.

reply

Definitely. I often am drawn to her in scenes because of her reactions. She really pulled off what Alex was going through this season. The emotional range she was able to portray was some of the best on the show.

Having spent much of my life around the theatre I feel pretty qualified to say she is damn good in this role—it fits her like a glove. Your comments reveal you don't know much about the craft of acting--line readings are for the birds.
