shareThe way I heard it is that Paul McCartney was in town. He is friends with Lorne Michaels and was visiting, possibly scheduling an appearance or hosting in the very near future. Anyways, McCartney came up with the idea and Michaels loved it so much that he had Amy Poehler come in and the 2 of them finished it within 2 hours.

I'm pretty sure it was a combination of everyone that has been mentioned, with SOME credit to Palin since she was sitting there and probably would have made a big deal if the rap was somewhat negative or controversial.
Of course she did hear all the comments about her throughout the show and year.
