What Happened with Boardwalk Empire?

So Molly Parker's image was used as Mabel Thompson (Nucky's deceased wife) during the first season of Boardwalk Empire. The producers and Molly herself indicated that there was a reason for that, meaning she would be appearing on the show either in an actual storyline or flashbacks.

Cut to season 5 of Boardwalk Empire and we get the appearance of Mabel Thompson in a season long flashbacks arc being played by another Actress (Maya Kazan), So my question is what the hell happened? was Molly unavailable at the time to play the role? it feels like she was cast to the play the role during season 2 but then her scenes either got cut or the writers went in a different direction. Did anyone ever hear of some behind the scenes wrangling?

Mabel Thompson was pretty young in the season 5 flashbacks of BE. Molly was most likely too old to convincingly play a woman in her early-mid twenties. That's my guess, anyway.
