Why didn't Tangled help her career..?

Tangled was a huge success, and Rapunzel is still huge in Disney parks etc... Why didn't this film help neither her film nor singing career? She sang beautifully in this film and still hasn't put out any music since.

Mandy Moore is not a case of repeated bad decisions. She’s made the best of her options, it’s just that the top-tier stuff has never been on offer for her. She has made her fair share of bad movies, which has undoubtedly hurt her over the years, but she’s done good work, too. Enough good work to warrant more chances. It’s just that none of those chances have panned out (see also: Her repeated bad luck during pilot season). And that’s where luck comes in.

No matter how talented you are, or how hard you work, when it comes to the entertainment industry, you still need a healthy dose of luck. This Nerdist podcast with Clark Gregg—a talented guy who knocked around for years before getting lucky with Marvel—includes a great discussion of just how demoralizing auditioning is (it’s a big part of why actors are such *beep* up people), and how little control an actor has over what roles she gets. When thinking about Mandy Moore, Gregg’s comments on auditioning leapt immediately to mind.

Because Moore can’t control the perception that she’s the knock-off of someone else. First it was Britney, then later, Heigl. Keeping in mind that everything is relative and we’re talking about the difference between being a jobbing actor and a movie star, luck has never gone Moore’s way. Tangled is the biggest hit of her movie career, and it was a vocal performance. None of her other movies have even broken fifty million in box office, so she’s certainly not a box office draw. All she needed was one movie to break out, like 27 Dresses did for Heigl, and she would’ve been on better footing. But it didn’t happen.

Television hasn’t been much kinder. She’s done memorable guest arcs on popular shows, but has never managed to land her own headline gig. She’s actually had a pretty rough time in TV land over the last couple years. Moore has been around the block several times during pilot season, never getting a pick up and, worse, got released from an ABC pilot (which also didn’t get picked up). But it’s not like she’s not trying. The answer to so many career prospectuses is “try TV”, but Moore is, it just isn’t working out. It’s that luck thing again. She just doesn’t ever seem to be in the right place at the right time. That may be changing with a recurring role on Red Band Society, but well, network TV isn’t the most stable place to be these days.

There isn’t an easy fix for Mandy Moore. There isn’t something she should be doing—she’s already doing everything she can. She does work, even if it’s not particularly distinguished (like Hallmark Hall of Fame Christmas movies), and she has built a good career as a voice over artist. That’ll pay the bills while she keeps rolling the dice on TV gigs. And then, too, there is her recording career. Supposedly she has a new album in the offing, to be produced by her husband, Ryan Adams, though it was supposed to come out like, two years ago and didn’t. All she can do is keep on keeping on, and hope some luck finally goes her way.

Zachary out sang her in the movie even though he's a comedic actor. Showbiz was never a good direction for her. She had a mediocre voice (mostly head, very annoying and nasally). She wasn't credible as a songwriter as her themes were sophomoric and childish. She wasn't that big of a pop star as Britney or Christina were. She was background noise in the pop world. She makes lackluster movies and is married to someone a lot more talented than her in the industry. She'll never get that big hit. Tangled was entertainment but Frozen knocked that film right out of the top fast. She's irrelevant now.

Are you talking about her last two albums, "Amanda Leigh" and "Wild Hope"? Because they are both solid albums, and got pretty decent reviews. "Coverage" isn't too bad either.

The same reason animated films do not propel it's voice actors into live action film offers. In fact many of the voice actors of Disney films have never eventuated to any solid successful film career.

Do you see any of the voice actors of Disney films in the past with successful film careers? Not really.

Tangled was a good mark on her resume, but that's it. She had already bruised her own career with the string of terrible romcoms she made in her early 20s and continued to make after Tangled. I'm just glad she got the message and has ruled out those films now. But I think she did those films for the paycheck, and I can't blame her. Sometimes you need to make money and she certainly wasn't making much with her music.

It's good that she's smart enough to know that television is where it's at these days. Unfortunately, she's not having much luck but she is getting work offers nonetheless.

Can you possibly imagine, in this day and age, someone getting all het up about THE NEW MANDY MOORE ALBUM????

WTF?

She will never be a star, movies, TV, or music. She might possibly do a play, a family friendly thing. Or a career of Lifetime Movies.

Hey, Lifetime has made some of my all time favorite movies. And every time I have recommended one of my favorite Lifetime movies to a friend or family member, they've watched it and loved it as much as I did. I wish people gave Lifetime more credit for how good some of their movies really are. It's disappointing, because many of the movies and actors in those movies from Lifetime are far better than the movies (particularly the "box office smashes") I have seen come out over the last few years.

Lifetime is for women. Which is interesting since everything on lifetime is about women either being killed, raped, stalked, or cheated on. Also they will do combinations of them too. Lifetime films get deleted off my DVR within a couple days since their so generic if you miss one you can just watch the next one which makes them a waste of space. At least spike for men but watched by all Has such interesting movies too original content like Blue mountain state that it doesn't make you want too meet the business end of a shotgun.

All voice actors are either unknown to the general public and will likely stay that way for the rest of their careers (the voice of Ariel, Jodi Benson, never became a household name in spite of The Little Mermaid's massive success), or they already have name recognition from something else, hence why they were cast, and they're not likely to advance further in their careers from doing voiceover work, it's just a way to earn a paycheck. Ms. Moore falls in the latter category. She was well known to teen girls, that's why she got the part, and yes the movie was a great success, but as I say so was The Little Mermaid and honestly how many people know the name Jodi Benson?

I can think of only two examples where doing voice acting helped someone's career. The first is Robin Williams as the Genie in Aladdin. Actually he had a prominent voice role in Ferngully which was released a year before, but I would say that Williams' performance in Aladdin greatly overshadowed his Ferngully role and reminded the world what a brilliant comedian he was. Not that his career was in a slump before Aladdin, and obviously his part in the movie was a case of stunt casting, I'm just saying his brilliance in it probably helped him get cast in even more comedy films than before. The other example I can think of is Idina Menzel in Frozen, who is obviously a closer analogue to Ms. Moore. Personally I don't get all the gushing over Menzel. I do not care for her singing, especially that godawful "Let It Go", but apparently I'm alone in my thinking. I'm afraid we have to come to the conclusion that, for whatever reason, the public just didn't go ape-shiat over Ms. Moore's performance the way they did over Ms. Menzel's. And who can fathom what the public likes anyway?

Must dash. I forgot to feed my wombat.
