Why was Dennis Miller on Monday Night Football? || World Renowned Sports

Dennis Miller is widely regarded as the worst announcer ever to work on Monday Night Football. Why was he there? Who thought this was a good idea? Why was he not laughed out of the room immediately?

ABC was losing ratings to "Pro" Wrestling on Monday nights so they tried to add a dose of mainstream entertainment to their announcer corps. They also rehired that horrible Don Ohlmeyer to come back and hire whomever he wanted. Ohlmeyer is the man who fired Norm McDonald from Weekend Update so it's really, really either ironic or just plain weird that he hired former Weekend Update alum Dennis Miller as a MNF announcer. It was a hail mary pass by ABC/Ohlmeyer to boost sagging ratings, and since this didn't work they got rid of MNF on ABC altogether as the heyday of Howard Cosell, Frank Gifford, and Dandy Don were lone, lone gong.

I remember this - very cringe worthy.
They also tried the concept of NO announcers, which was better than Miller.
