Was Stephen the 'John Lennon' to Ricky Gervais's Paul Mccartney.

Or the Larry David to Jerry Seinfeld.
In other words they're both great but only one's the genius.

Nah, to use your own words, I think he's the Paul Mccartney to the Paul Mccartney or the Seinfeld to the Seinfeld. Neither is a genius, but they are both pretty funny and have a nice synergy together.

I think Merchant's probably better overall on the theory of comedy, while Gervais is the impulsive crazy type who has creative ideas on the fly. Gervais unrestrained does not go well, all his work past the Extras has been bad (minus everything with Karl Pilkington), and that's when they split up. Have not seen Hello Ladies, but it doesn't seem that good. They need each other IMO.

Hello ladies is awesome. Stephen Merchant is awesome.

That's a strange comment to make. As a general rule it's always best to actually see something before judging it.

Gervais has done just fine. The series Derek was a successful change of pace. Both touching and funny, it was nominated once for a Golden Globe and twice for an Emmy.
