He got his ear pierced for a play, liked the look and kept it.

He had it pierced for his role in a contemporary version of Uncle Vanya (that I was lucky enough to see) and he decided to keep it, at least as long as people complained about it.

Tobias played Michael, a present-day English version of Astrov and to symbolize his mid-life crisis he had the earring instead of the mustache described in Chekhov's play.
