He's had a weird career but overall didn't reach his potential as a movie director

Won't say his career has been a complete disaster cause that would be wrong on my part, he's turned into a top class TV director with the likes of Games of Thrones, Black Sails, Hannibal and Westworld. He's still working to do this day and that's what most director's would consider a success.

But he is someone who really should have cemented himself as a top film director of action and horror films. He made a name for himself with his wonderful first two films in Dog Soldiers and The Descent, two films that have a large cult following to this day and both still hold up pretty damn well. The Descent is in for a shout for one of the best horror films of the last 20 years.

But I remember the hype and build for Doomsday, it was like we were getting a female led Mad Max action film but the film came out to meh reviews and poor box office. It has some good stuff there but it just falls off the rails once it hits the last third, which is a shame.

The came his Roman action flick Centurion in 2010, with a great cast with Michael Fassbender (who was on his rise as a top and respected actor at the time), post Bond Olga Kurylenko, Dominic West, David Morrissey, Ulrich Thomsen, Noel Clarke and Riz Ahmed. I did hear that the Studio got involved and got Marshall to cut half the film out (he seems to have problems with Studios, look at the alternative ending they asked him to shoot for The Descent). It's not a perfect film (Fassbender didn't seem to be a fan of it going by some interviews) but I think it's far better then many give it credit for also it's better then Doomsday. Fassbender is a great action hero, which doesn't always come off in his Hollywood films and Kurylenko is a great villain. Lot of bloody gore and action. Again not perfect but a fun little action film.

Aside from a segment in a Anthology horror film, he was just doing TV for a long time. Then came Hellboy reboot, which is seen as one of the worse films of the year. He's going back to the UK to make a low budget horror, hopefully it bring back some of the glory of his first two films.

He's rumored for the next King Kong film, but for me I'd like to see him stick with low budget horror and action films, it seems to bring out the best in him and keep studio's away from his films. He's probably never getting back to those first two films quality sadly but fingers crossed.

Dog Soldiers (2002) and The Descent (2005) was such a solid one-two. A shame he couldn't maintain that level.
