Did he get life in prison because there were 6 victims?

In other words, he conspired to commit six murders?? It feels disingenous to me. And I do believe him when he says he did not tell anyone to do something they didn't want to do. If anyone is a lawyer please explain to me the legality of keeping him in jail for 50 years.
