Rebel Without a Cause

I read she auditioned for the part of Judy, but the director, Nick Ray, wanted no part of her. After seeing the movie several times, I could've seen her in the role. I also didn't care for Natalie Wood anyway. Don't get me wrong. I loved her in West Side Story and I thought she was very good in Splendor in the Grass. I just didn't care for her in Rebel.

Jayne was far too old for the part of a high school girl, she would have looked ridiculous along side James Dean and especially Sal Mineo. So would have Marilyn, Mamie, Diana Dors. Physically the role called for at least some believable innocence which is not what any of these bombshells were famous for.

“Bombshell” trumps “plausible” every time. That’s why it’s called “show business.”

She was 22 at the time of her screentest...
