Is anyone else honestly surprised by all the media attention to the college bribery scam?

Just swiped this from GD. Have at it !

reply

I think the media attention is focused on the celebrity involvement, otherwise no one would really care.

There are serious aspects to this story, but that people are surprised rich people try to buy their kids into decent schools shouldn't be a surprise.

reply

I didn't say the crime wasn't serious or that there's any surprise celebrities would be involved, I said it's the celebrity involvement that made the story worthy enough for MovieChat discussion.

Like the Robert Kraft Happy Ending story. Those places are raided all the time, but if Kraft weren't involved, it's a local story at best.

I suppose the housewife and whatever that show LL was on makes it fodder for MC but a lot of people here are interested in non-celebrity issues.

reply

I'm sure you're right, but my only point is that this story is nationwide news because of the celebrity of those caught in the scheme. If this were just about anonymous rich folks, I'm sure we wouldn't even remember it by now.

reply

Yeah, I suppose you are right. Still, it's rather scandalous that college officials are taking bribes. Should be a popular topic for at least a couple of days.

reply

It'll keep going at least until the cases are settled one way or the other and sentences imposed, then pick back up when the celebrities (if any) get released from jail.

While the celebs and other entitled rich folks are getting their just deserts, I think the skunks at the colleges should get more.

fake news

Not really it involves celebrities. One of whom is Lori and she has a squeaky clean kind of image so it makes for a good story.

I'm mostly surprised at the righteous indignation a lot of people are spouting over Lori Loughlin's situation. The initial reaction had a political bent, and even Trump tried to conflate the scandal with liberalism in general until it was discovered that Lori and her husband are/were big Trump supporters and Felicity Huffman, a known Hillary supporter, faced the music and took her medicine so that whole thing piped down.

In my opinion, I really don't care because pay-for-play has been part of the American "system" since this country was established. It does make for good TV drama, and I wonder if Charisma Carpenter will have a resurrected career on Hallmark/Lifetime channel playing Lori in a dramatization of the whole thing! LOL
