Great actor, terrible writer?

I'd like to know what all your opinions are? He's my favourite character in Reno 911! and you can tell he has great poise and wit. However, his screenwriting skills seem to be lacking. Herbie Full Loaded, The Pacifier, Taxi, Let's Go To Prison? You'd think a man who is a big part of Reno 911! and The State would have some killer jokes up his sleeves for films.

I'm not close-minded, you're just wrong

I agree with you totally. On Reno 911 as Dangle he has perfected comedic timing and is one of the best improv actors I've seen to date but when I saw that he was a screenwriter for "Herbie" and "Taxi" I thought there had to be another Thomas Lennon. Even "Balls of Fury" doesn't look promising unless it does a total 180 like "Kung Fu Hustle". With Herbie though, going PG must have hurt his writing, that's all I can redeem him for.

he also wrote for the state, viva variety, reno 911.. night at the museum made how many hundred million? :)... those are all huge winners. the pacifier, herbie are (im guessing, haven't seen them) aimed at younger audience.. and they both made a ton at the box office as such. talking, 70 million and 100+ million.

taxi.. i saw it, it could have been decent, but it wasn't. jimmy fallon is hilarious, queen latifah is not. still made alot of money. let's go to prison... different kind of comedy and it didn't do so well, i still enjoyed it. it could have been great, will arnett is amazing, but it was.. ok.

lennon/garant write hugely profitable movies. i wouldn't say their skills are lacking at all. it's different from what you'd expect from them, but it works for what it is.

ps. the baxter and wet hot american summer; 2 amazing movies from other state alumni.

Those other ones suck but Balls of Fury has potential IMHO. I just came here to say the guy is hilarious (I have a comedy I'm writing that he seems perfect for) and did not know he was a writer as well. You learn something new every day.

he helped create Reno 911 so no he is NOT a terrible writer i do think however that Reno 911 is his best work BY far i didnt like night at the museum and id didnt like herbie but i like taxi and i thought lets go 2 prison was OK i didnt like balls of fury all that much it had a few laughs but it wasnt as funny as it could have been im in love with him and Ben he was the best part of balls of fury i thought

my overall anwser is no he is a goood writer but i will always c him as dangle and i will always like his humor in reno 911 the best

he's obviously writing these movies for the paycheck and the street cred, balls of fury was kinda funny though, i liked how they just took 'enter the dragon' and turned it into a comedy

but then again, i'm not so sure, lol - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PSVP9LuRhU

I think it's all the stars you've named (not to mention Ben Stiller) that made the big bucks, not the writing of these movies. I agree the Night at the Museum movies are AWFUL. I don't get how two guys who were so brilliant in writing the first five seasons of Reno 911 (the sixth sucks) could have written movies of such suckitude.
