We Need More Black and Female Film Critics...

...to call out the bullshit, like that awfully contrived shot in Avengers: Endgame where all of the female superheroes stand together in an awkward line during the middle of a sprawling war, that white male politically progressive liberal arts graduate critics are too pathetic and scared to criticise. These men are too scared, too guilty of their privilege, or too in awe of Brie to criticise.

Most of the women I've seen comment on that shot have spoken about how condescending and pandering that moment is. My guess is, the more black and female critics we get, the less often people like Brie Larson will be able to get away making crap films or ruin otherwise good films with their patronising bullshit.

So I say, bring it on. Just be careful what you wish for Brie. 😁

Yes that is a pure Disney moment, descended straight from their Disney Princess factory, which itself just used pandering "respect" (and gender role enforcement!) to sell merchandise.

The context will be lost to time, too. In 20 years it may be a confusing shot that seems to happen for no reason.

But I'd still rather see that than a TOO-CONSPICUOUS American Flag passing or planted right in front of the camera.

reply

Was the too conspicuous flag a part of Endgame?

I don't approve, but I must have missed that.

reply

No, but it's been done in far too many movies. Michael Bay likes to throw them in, too.

This is I think Transformers 4: https://i2.wp.com/www.audienceseverywhere.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/b592h7j880nf8j02.jpg

Someone did a video of Bay's flag-porn shots:

We all know Michael Bay loves America. Well now you get to see every single American Flag that he has placed in all 12 of his movies, from Bad Boys all the way to 13 Hours.

reply

It's in Spider-Man and X-Men as well (along with the Israeli flag).

Isn't Captain America supposed to be some kind of campy flag waiving hero? I think it looks worse to deliberately deny the audience his signature move and subvert the character. They could just CGI it out for China.

reply

I'm sure the first Capt. America had some flag porn.

reply

My favorite flag-waver (albeit ironically) is SuperPatriot.

CappyAm is the most uber Americanos in the MCU. That stupid shield that is invulnerable and might act like a boomerang. The only thing I like about Cappy is he's like Batman in that he shouldn't have any special powers. I think in this universe he was experimented on, thus his power. I prefer to think of him as GI Joe with an extra edge.

What's more condescending is the fact the women of color that surrounded her to protect and clear a path for her did pretty much nothing, LOL! She didn't even need them, she literally just flew straight then powered up in her fiery glow and punched through everyone. Pretty sure Mantis charmed her enemies to death by touching them really fast then telling them they they're privileged male aliens so they killed themselves.

reply

The problem is that the Jews who own all the newspapers don't trust that women and coloreds can write, so they don't allow them to become critics. Brie didn't mention that.

Let me tell you how this works. Disney needs a bunch of people to help push their social justice narrative, and only a few people to complain that it doesn't go far enough. You start opening the door for criticism too much and you're going to find yourself alt-right adjacent.

You are the dictionary definition of a ding-dong. Not baked by Hostess. Baked by bad parenting and your own bad decisions.
I'm left of the equation but I don't know what you are trying to say here.

reply

Well since the time I replied to this, I have found out that that feminism in Avengers isn't Disney and it isn't recent.

This is an actual Avengers cover:

December 1983!

Interesting stuff.

I don't know anything about Brie, but please don't blame her for the messages in the movie. Maybe if you follow her on social media, but she doesn't have a lot of influences on movies she is currently making. Just a pretty face who can deliver dialog.

Being a Film Critic is the most Unimportant Job on the fucking planet. Nobody going to die because of film review. World War 3 isnt going break out because of a Film Reviews. I get what she was trying to say. But the way tried to say it sucked. The Main Problem with Brie Larson is she think she is changing the world by making movies. If you really want to help people you don't make movies for soulless corporation who pay there park employee in peanuts and you don't write film reviews. You volunteer at soap kitchens and open homeless shelters or at very least give to charity. I hear California has huge homeless problem and lot of them are POC. So were the hell is Bree when comes that shit. Mark Ruffalo is probably more "woke" than Brie. But he don't come off as delusional. And at least he protest things that are actually important.
