her winning her oscar is so weird, she literally came out of nowhere.

she went from 21 jump street to Oscar???!!! ask 100 people who she is on the street, normal, everyday people and 95 of them won't know.

reply

That's the beauty of it. The new marion cottilard who was no one before her Oscar.

reply

Yep, that's the power of one great film and performance that gets the right support from the right people/festivals/distributors etc.

reply

Not exactly... she was highly acclaimed and won a number of awards for Short Term 12, and had significant roles in several reasonably successful movies prior to Room.

reply

exactly, she was a nobody and no one, and I mean no one knew who she was before room. what movie did marion win an Oscar for? yeah, this is like Cinderella, the overnight sensation. and for anyone who disagrees with me on this you are wrong, nobody knew her name or face before room, she is the ultimate, going from a nobody to the it girl. oh and also for anyone who disagrees with me, well she went from a bit part in 21 freaking jump street just 4 year ago to Room???!!! I mean that is what you call a career turnaround. going from a generic, easily forgotten, lost, ok comedy, and just playing a very small role in it to this???!!! wow, her success and huge status came out of nowhere.

reply

Stop assuming just because YOU didn't know her that no one else did. Were you born in 2002? Because that would put into perspective why you don't know her. Room was a small budget movie who cast her based on her strong audition. Her performance was so good that it gained attention and propelled her to superstardom. It happens. Talent prevails. Same thing happened to Jennifer Lawrence. She was a nobody who had a strong performance in 'Winter Bone', then out of nowhere was on everyone's radar and started getting Oscar nominations. But unlike Lawrence, Larson actually DID have a career prior to 'Room'. Look up 'United States of Tara'.

reply

and all those moves and performances no one has seen and no one knows about. and no one knew who she was, no one knew her face or her name before last year or this year.

reply

Stop assuming that because you know who she is everyone else does. 95% of people still wouldn't have a clue who she is. I'm not sure why you are taking issue with a completely reasonable statement.

Jennifer Lawrence was 2o when she was cast in X-men. Brie Larson is 27. That is a big difference. And yeah, we know she had a carreer. An unsuccessful one, which is why it is unusual, especially for a female actor.

reply

But to say NOBODY AT ALL KNEW HER is also pretty dumb. She has a very long list of credits for a nobody who has had an "unsuccessful" career.

I have been following her for a while now. First in Scott Pilgrim, where she was great in a smallish role. Since then I've seen her pop up and be very likable and memorable in some great comedy shows like The League and Community. She was great in a supporting role in Trainwreck and then Room she just blew me away and deserved every bit of that Oscar.

You use JL as a comparison. She is the one that came out of nowhere after her Oscar nom in the small Winter's Bone. Brie has been building a solid career for quite a while now. You can say she is finally breaking into the mainstream, but to say she came completely out of nowhere is a little silly.
