Funniest Fife Moments

One of the greatest sitcom characters ever. So many hilarious moments.

What are some of your favorite Fife moments and screw ups?

Barney's Motorcycle with the sidecar. He got teased by everyone for that.

Barney and Gomer enter the "haunted house" to retrieve Opie's baseball.

Barney in a wedding dress as a decoy so Charlene Darling can marry her fiance without Ernest T. Bass trying to kidnap the bride (He kidnaps Barney instead).

Barney's New Car- the old lady who sold it to him really took him for a ride!

reply

Barney determined to get Andy married by any means possible, because he knows so much about women himself (ahem) ...

reply

Barney was an "expert" on women, childrearing, the criminal mind, etc.

Another scene I just remembered was Barney's lecture to the three hardened criminals they had in the jail overnight.

"Here on the ROCK, we have rules. The first rule is- obey all rules!"

He proceeds to give them some items to work on to pass the time: a metal working kit, a woodworking kit and a Mr. Potato Head. lol

reply

Ha! A wonderful scene!

"During our lifetime we travel many roads. Some big roads, some little roads, rocky roads and smooth roads, dirt highways and improved highways."

"The tears on my pillow bespeak the pain that is in my heart."

?You know there's one thing she used to do that really burned me up. I'd show up at her house with a grape snow cone, and I'd offer her a bite. You know what she did, she'd bite off the bottom of the cone, suck out all the syrup and leave me nothing but the ice. You know what I'd do if I saw her now? I'd show up at her door with a grape snow cone, and when she answered the door, I'd bite off the bottom, suck out the syrup and hand her the ice! Now what do you think about that?!?"

reply

Andy- I think if I saw a 35 year old man standing there, holding a grape snow cone, I wouldn't even answer the door."

reply

I'm cracking up just reading those words. :)

reply

I start thinking about Barney scenes and I crack up too!

One of the best is when Ernest T. comes to town and Andy gives him a makeover, a la "My Fair Lady".

Barney teaches Ernest how to enter a room properly and greet guests. He proceeds to do an unintentionally hilarious pantomime.

Ernest to Andy- I can't HEAR him! I can't HEAR him!

Barney- Those are the amenities and you DON'T shout the amenities.

Ernest- Well I can't hear his "amenanies"!

Barney discussing Ernest's makeover- You know if you wrote this into a play, no one would believe it.

reply

I love Ernest T.'s "Missus WILE-EE."

Just happened to see "The Cow Thief" last night & Barney was exceptional.

State investigator: "Did you make a moulage?"

Barney: "Uh, well we didn't want to make a big moulage out of it."

But I also love Barney's heartfelt talk with Andy about how Andy gave him a chance to be a deputy, when the then-mayor thought it was a crazy idea.

reply

LOL

Barney did try to bluff his way out of many situations. Like when he tried out for a singing role and was asked if he could sing a cappella.
He said he could and started a hearty chorus singing , "A cappella, a cappella..."

Barney had a good heart and he meant well. But sometimes I think Andy should have encouraged him to try a safer line of work!

However he did show a lot of bravery by confronting those two roadside peddlers who didn't have licenses. They defied him after he told them to move along. He was scared but he stood his ground.

reply

Yes, and when they were after the escaped convict Barney had accidentally captured earlier, Andy makes it clear that if Barney wants to stay behind, he can. Barney gives a firm smile & says, "Let's go."

Followed by getting the drop on the convict again &thanks to Andy) & then uttering the immortal words, "I swallowed my gum." :)

reply

LOL One of my favorite Barney quotes along with his opinion of Aunt Bee's homemade pickles, kerosene cucumbers.

reply

"Operation pickle switch!"

reply

LOL I also liked when he had parental advice for Andy if Opie misbehaved.

"Nip it, nip it, nip it!!"

The entire episode when Thelma Lou befriended a sad Opie because a girl named Karen rejected him was a funny one for Barney!

A little boy "stole" his girlfriend and only Barney could go ballistic the way he did. He was jealous of a child.

He tells Andy that he's always liked Opie. He's a well behaved boy, but he's becoming a PEST! lol
Barney took himself and his problems so seriously.

reply

And then Barney's "expert" advice to Opie: "Just step right out in front of her and say, 'Here I am, you lucky girl! Play your cards right and I might let you walk with me!' It never fails!"

reply

I just had to watch that one last night. I have a DVD called "The Best of Barney".

His whole phone conversation over the phone with Opie is hilarious. Opie asks him why he wants to go to the duck pond at night because he won't be able to see the ducks and Barney's reaction is priceless.

'That boy shouldn't be allowed to use the telephone. He's a minor!" Today Opie would be carrying around his own phone.

I had forgotten the whole snow cone conversation was in that particular episode. That girl was a snob because "her daddy was a Civil Servant."

reply

I need to go back to the episode where Barney tries to find a wife for Andy & basically has a cattle call of available women come over to Andy's house. I especially love the dinner he & Thelma Lou plan to get Andy & Helen together ... until Barney decides that Helen wont do (from meory):

Helen: "I'm afraid I'm not a very good cook."
Barney: "Oh, you're just being modest."
Helen: "No, it's true."
Barney: "Well, for gosh sakes, what are you gonna feed your husband?"
Helen: "He'll have to settle for TV dinners, I suppose."
Andy: "What's wrong with TV dinners? I like 'em."
Barney: "No you don't!!!"

reply

I was thinking about that one too!

I think that Thelma Lou was serving leg of lamb, Andy's favorite dish. Barney went on and on about Helen learning to cook leg of lamb, "Andy's favorite dish."

Earlier Barney agreed to butt out of Andy's dating life, but when he found out that Andy was planning on courting Helen, Barney went ballistic.

Another funny episode with Barney was when Gomer drove Thelma Lou to another town on an errand.

Gomer went on about how Thelma Lou was so nice and even bought him lunch.

Barney tells Andy, "In all the years we been goin' together, she never bought ME lunch!"

reply

What a great episode!

Gomer: "Oh, I told her about how Barney wasn't worried about her, because he's got her right in his hip pocket."

Andy: "You told her that?"

Gomer: "Yep, she liked it so much she had me say it twice."

reply

Barney learned the HARD way not to take his girlfriend for granted!

in "Opie's Three Wishes", Barney and Gomer buy an old fortune telling game and Barney is convinced he can make wishes come true.

He's sure that Opie wished for his Pa and Miss Crump to get married. Of course, Barney had to spread that rumor! Never could learn his lesson and butt out.

reply

In a previous "Barney is sure Andy is getting married" episode, when they redo the bedroom and throw a surprise party for the "happy couple", I love how at the end, Gomer tells Barney, "Boy, what a dumb trick. Don't ever call me dumb again, Barney. Great party, but a dumb trick."

reply

LOL Gomer was supposedly not too bright, but he sure knew how to give it to Barney. LOL

"Citizen's arrest. Citizen's arrest!!" Barney was fit to be tied.
