She sure disappeared from Hollywood

Remember when she was the heir apparent to Natalie Portman? Then whoosh, she just sorta vanished. Was it the Pirate movies that did her in?

reply

Or maybe Hollywood realized that she's a terrible actress with zero range?

Don't feel sorry for her, she made millions out of Hollywood before they got tired of her. If she has any sense, she's set for life, and can act when she likes or spend time with her kid if she prefers.

reply

She was a completely forgettable nonentity.

EDIT: Please forgive my passion-fueled redundancy. Nonentities are by their very nature completely forgettable, e.g., 85 percent of the posters on MC Politics topics.

reply

It's not like Natalie Portman has much more talent.

reply

You will notice that I ignored the OP’s misguided but implied enthusiasm for Knightly’s “heir apparent” statue apropos Portman, ‘cause who the hell would want to inherit that? There’s nothing there.

reply

Natalie Portman has made a hell of a lot of money at acting, in spite of having almost no talent or ability.

Why can't *I* make millions, for not being very good at something?

reply

Luck mostly, Natalie Portman got cast in Leon because she was cute. Don't envy rich people, you know what they say more money more problems.

reply

I'd be happy to devote my life to conducting experiments on the effect of money on personal happiness, all I need is a grant! Ten million, minimum.

reply

To me she's 100 times more likeable and charming than portman.
Maybe portman has a better dramatic flair than Keira, but that doesn't mean she's a better actress. I'm way more engaged when she's on screen than when portman is.

reply

Funny thing... I've noticed when an actress is considered to be a good dramatic actress by the powers that be in Hollywood, it really seems like they are simply politely saying they aren't that hot and lack sufficient fun bags to interest anyone beyond gay men and female Hallmark channel types.

reply

Well, that's true but in the fun bags department Keira ranks at -10, yet she's hot and I'm engaged when she's on screen (and I'm not a gay man nor female Hallmark channel types, I'm quite the fun bags aficionado).

reply

You're probably an American and have fallen for the British accent override that sometimes fools Americans into thinking a woman is hotter than she is based on her voice alone... We'll call the that Siren song override. Try to image her with a voice like Rosie Perez and then ask yourself if you would still think she was hot.

reply

Thomas who the hell are you talkin about? In my original comment I was talkin about portman, to which comment you replied. Now you replied again but you're askin me to imagine her with Perez's voice? Who's "her"? I already don't think much of her, so that would make her even less attractive, but she is not british. So now you're talkin about Keira?

I couldn't care less about Keira's accent, nothing is less appealing to me than a british person so that's a preposterous idea. And also, her voice is part of her appeal, yes, but that goes for anybody. It's like saying "try to imagine Brad Pitt talking like Gilbert Gottfried, and then ask yourself if you think he's still hot".

reply

Young good looking actors are easily replaced, they are just a flavour of the week. I think her acting talent is very mediocre, she can't handle complex roles so they are given to better actors.

reply

i liked her more than Natalie Portman. Something about Portman really pissed me off

reply

Hardly a bad actress. She's one of the youngest people ever nominated for an Oscar.

She got older, and disappeared because she wanted to. Doesn't Hollywood prefer to chew up and spit out nubile, young things in their teens and twenties? She's still working, and she's also a mum now so she's dedicated to raising her daughter. It's well documented that she had a mental breakdown after her success in Pirates. She was only 17 or 18 when she filmed that. World-wide fame (and scrutiny) took its toll. She didn't want to be the biggest celebrity in the world nor hounded by paparazzi all her life. Anyway, I love her. She's so funny in interviews.

reply

I liked her a lot more than Natalie Portman. Portman makes me mad for some reason. She isn't bad in movies but in real life i just don't like her

reply

I saw an interview with her the other day and she is not the cute young thing she used to be. As others have mentioned, all you're left with is a mediocre actress.

And yeah, as others mentioned as well, something about Portman has always put me off. It's like I can feel her disdain for me through the screen.

reply

Unlike say her co-star in Never Let Me Go, Carey Mulligan. Keira never quite had the range as a actress to carry her forward. Mulligan even if she's not the lead in films. She usually steals the film anyway. I can't remember Keira ever stealing a film. That's why today Carey is the more respected actress. It's nothing to do with her having a child or been married, a lot of actresses have become mothers and wives and still keep up been great actress or keeping themselves in the limelight.

Also outside the POTC franchise, she's never really had super big hit films. Love Actually would be the closet. Most of her work is usually little seen or just not very good. Atonement aside, she's never been blown away Oscar worthy in films either. She's a solid actress, that's been helped that she was highly rated by the studios and she's easy on the eyes.

Not saying she's not done good work, Pride and Prejudice, Atonement, Anna Karenina, Begin Again, The Imitation Game, A Dangerous Method, Never Let Me Go. She's a good solid actress and I think once she gets older and slips into supporting work, she probably be a better actress for it.
