Is he retired?

Great sci-fi director but he hasn't made anything since 2009. Any word on what he's up to?

reply

I was wondering what happened to him as well.

His last two movies didn't do very well. Southland Tales even had the sort of film student type who goes for things like Donnie Darko pretty divided. The Box was more conventional but that didn't do well either.

Maybe he's having trouble getting financing for another movie? Or he decided he didn't like the business and left?

So he hasn't quite the business. Trying to get another Southland Tales movie made. No wonder its taking so long to get his next movie greenlit.

I don't know. He is a very interesting guy. I listened to the commentary on both Donnie Darko and The Box and both were very enlightening. The guy really thought things through when developing the story and script. Too bad people want their movies spoon fed to them.

reply

Too bad they want them to be good.

reply

Good like what? Something with a dragon? Enlighten me with your movie knowledge and taste.

reply

If you think Southland Tales and The Box are "good" then you are the one who needs to explain your "taste"

reply

You didn't answer my question. Why?

reply

The Box was just okay and Southland Tales was a complete mess. Richard Kelly himself said that the story wasn't supposed to make sense as a stand alone film. It has nothing to do with wanting to be spoon fed.

reply

Never mentioned Southland Tales.

reply

Forky mentioned it above and you didn't question him so...

reply

I never actually saw it, so that is why I didn't mention it.

reply

I don't know.

He hasn't hit a home-run after Donnie Darko.

I remember when the movie came out and Richard was branded as the next wunderkind of Hollywood. I was a believer as well back then but after that movie he didn't materialize any more notable work. What made it worse was when the studio made a sequel involving Donnie's little sister without Richard's involvement, yet even today he's associated with that sequel and its failure.

It's really sad.
