ONE OF THE NICEST PEOPLE I WORKED WITH ...

In 1980 ... the very first feature I worked on was an AMERICAN ZOETROPE / FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA production of a WIM WENDERS film entitled, 'HAMMETT' ...

... of which I was a Casting Coordinator for Extras for the scenes shot in San Francisco.

One night, we were shooting in downtown S.F., and I was in the Make-Up / Hair Trailer talking to the Legendary MARY KEATS working out the the best times to get a classroom of Chinese 8-10 year old girls to get a traditional 'Bowl Haircut' for some upcoming scenes a few weeks away.

The door opened and there was DAVID PATRICK KELLY -- in costume -- big Fedora and dark suit ... and having seen him ... and had been so impressed by his character in the (then) recent 'WARRIORS' ... I half-expected that baddie he played to do his sing-song 'Warrrrrr-iors, come out and playyyy-yeee-aaayyyy' ---

-- but no.

Instead, in a soft voice, he said to Ms. Keats & myself, 'Pardon me, Ma'am ... Sir ... I'm sorry to interrupt ... but, can you tell me where I can find the 2nd A.D., Danny Attias ..?'

I seem to recall saying, 'I saw him over by the ...' (whatever it was) and he said his thanks and left the trailer.

To this day -- 35-plus years later, his polite manner still rings wondrously in my memory ... and through the years, I've often wished many of my co-workers in films & commercials to be even 10% as polite as Mr. David Patrick Kelly was and likely still is.

PS: FYI .... I worked on the 'first version' of the film when the great BRIAN KEITH was the co-star ... later replaced and re-shot by PETER BOYLE.

Glad to hear it. Its always funny hearing about these guys who are such perfect villains, yet really nice guys.

I liked him in the Crow and Commando. I was surprised to see he is such a big Broadway star. He's like a new Klaus Kinski always playing these disgusting little pervie, vile men who get the most horrific deaths.

Dreamscape was where I first saw him though and he really was ghastly in that. "HAVE A HEART" HAHA.

NOT TO CHANGE THE THREAD TOO MUCH AWAY FROM MR. KELLY:

The thing about Klaus Kinski, he was a monster to most everyone he came in contact with personally & professionally. Alas, it happens and it gets excused because of their box-office appeal.

For more info, take a gander at this documentary, "My Best Fiend" by his longtime friend and director, Werner Herzog.

GERMAN: "Mein liebster Feind - Klaus Kinski," literally "My Dearest Enemy - Klaus Kinski")

Thanks for the cool note back, btw. Mr. Kelly deserves as much work as he can take. He earned it in my book.

My brothers a big Kinski fan. I've seen the Best Fiend docu. He was a complete a$$hole.

You're welcome.

What's your favourite role of his? Its hard to say as he has brilliant death scenes in The Crow and Commando, but Dreamscape gave him the most to do and he really was just so menacing.

Its funny though whenever he dies a huge cheer must go up in the cinema because he's always a badguy LOL.

"Sully remember when I said I'd kill you last? I LIED!"

You asked, "What's your favourite role of his?"

Likely 'THE WARRIORS' ... as it stood out as one of the best, certainly the most memorable scene of the film ...

... but then again, as he was a peach to work with and it was my first film, 'HAMMETT' ... for sentimental reasons.

Thanks for asking-!
