Is it an ego thing?

Let me explain my question, him Vin Diesel & Statham and probably others don't like getting "beaten" in most of their films. They even have it written in like their contracts in the Fast and furious films.

Same with Steven Seagull. Even in his early days. Is getting beaten, bloodied & defeated, like a sign of weakness for them or something? I mean, you're an action hero. Aren't you supposed to get knocked down so that you can rise up stronger & stuff

From my personal experience, growing up, I was a huge Van Damme fan. Dude is jacked & a real life badass but he didn't mind getting his ass kicked in his films. Same with Jackie Chan. I mean, when your main hero is down, you get to root for him & cheer when he wins

But most of these modern action stars, with a few exceptions, just seem to wanna be like a Terminator or something. Bulldozing through things & people

reply

That's exactly what it is, an ego thing. For all the talk of Dwayne being a nice guy in real life, he's always struck me as very fake and egocentric.

Learning this just confirms my gut feeling that The Rock is a self-absorbed narcissist behind the scenes. He'll probably be regretting this stupid contract of his once his career fades to dust in a couple years.

reply

May be ego. Could also be about protecting the brand. These guys make the big bucks in certain types of films within a narrow range of character type and need to meet audience expectations.
Also, with the possible exception of Jason Sratham, I suspect most of these guys are very limited in what they can do on screen so there is even more need to protect the brand.

reply

Certainly. I think it's much the same thing as when Will Smith refused to do those gay scenes. I know he's said he regretted that later on, but in a lot of markets, that definitely would have destroyed his macho appeal. But his career imploded anyhow, it didn't matter.

reply

Hm, which movie was it where Will Smith refused to do gay scenes?

reply

Six Degrees of Separation. It was during his early Fresh Prince years.

reply

Ah. I remember him kissing another guy in that film, though. Did the director plan to have more explicit gay sex scenes that Smith refused to do?

reply

It was shot in such a way that he didn’t really kiss him. Smith said later he would have gone through with the kiss fully visible on camera.

reply

i'm confused or maybe i don't understand what the OP is talking about. But, the rock gets defeated or beaten up in a lot of his movies

reply

They get beaten up, (or rather, take hits) but they have very specific clauses in their contract on HOW they take hits. Here's the article:
https://screenrant.com/rock-vin-diesel-jason-statham-contracts-movie-fights-lose/

For example, you will never (and have never) seen Statham, Vin Diesel, or The Rock take a beating the way Bruce Willis and -- as OP pointed out -- Van Damme and Jackie Chan have taken beatings. Heck, in multiple movies Bruce Willis' characters are beaten within an inch of their life (Last Man Standing), and Jackie Chan will occasionally lose his fights and resort to running, if he needs to. Van Damme has also portrayed characters beaten within an inch of their life (especially Cyborg and Universal Soldier).

It helps build character dynamic when the characters have to reach deep down, just like in many Stallone flicks (although, he's rarely beaten to a pulp like the other characters I mentioned. Very few films show Stallone losing a fist fight, in fact I can't actually think of one outside of Rocky III and maybe Lockdown).

Anyway, it definitely takes away from the appeal of the character if they can't lose or if they have to only lose under very specific and very contrived circumstances (as depicted in the Fast & Furious films for all three of the eponymous headliners in OP's post).

Statham has never been in a movie where he's been bested the way Stallone's Rocky has, and The Rock has never been in a film where he's been steam-rolled in a fight the way Jackie Chan has, and Vin Diesel certainly has never been in a movie where he's been bloodied in a fight the way Arnold was in the original Conan. Although, Vin Diesel did almost showcase some three-dimensional characterization for Richard B. Riddick during the first half hour or so of the last Riddick film, when he was left for dead and had to straggle and scrape his way through some harsh survival circumstances.

Again the rock has gotten beat up in a lot of his movies go watch the run down he gets beaten up pretty badly by Ernie Reyes jr and his crew (that’s just off the top of my head)

So that right there proves people wrong.

That was before he was Hollywood's highest paid actor. I knew someone would bring that up, but that was the last time he truly got his butt kicked that badly. He also got thrown around in Race To Witch Mountain by the alien warrior, but again that was before he was Hollywood's highest paid actor.

I think it was after Fast Five that's when the clause went into effect, and since then you'll notice a DRASTIC change in how he's portrayed during his fights. You won't see him get the Bruce Willis treatment in any of his films.

Didn’t read

He lost to Apollo Creed in Rocky I and ended up in the hospital.

reply

He brings the people’s elbow. So he’s got that going for him…which is nice.

reply

I'm not sure if you know what you're talking about with this"getting beat within an inch of your life clause"
I can think of several scenes where The Rock is beaten down hard and has to lift himself back up.
Skyscraper he gets his leg blown off in the first 5 minutes and is limping around on a prosthetic the rest of the movie.
Walking Tall he gets beat down by casino security and ends up in the hospital with a giant knife wound across his entire midsection.
The Rundown he gets tossed around like a rag doll when fighting the rebels.
Hercules he gets beaten, captured and chained down 3/4 of the way through the movie.

SCHWARZENEGGER SYNDROME...ALOT OF GUYS HAVE IT...BUT,THERE IS ONLY ONE ARNOLD...JOHN WAYNE MADE A CAREER OF BEING THE LAST MAN STANDING,BUT HIS BEST WORK CAME WHEN HE WAS WILLING TO BE FLAWED,LAME OR KILLED.

reply

Did Arnie have a clause in his contract not to get beaten up though?

reply

HE WOULD HAVE HAD IT IF HE HAD THOUGHT OF IT.

reply

lol.

reply

Dude certainly loves himself and thinks he is the greatest thing ever. Also he is way overexposed. He does about three big budget movies a year and I think people may grow tired of him soon enough. He is not a good actor, but he does know what he is capable of and sticks with movies that will take in huge box office. As for getting beat up; it was an ego thing in F&F 8. You can see tons of articles about how he refused to shoot scenes with Vin Diesel (also a huge ego) and refused to be seen in a compromised or weak position or even shoot scenes with him.

reply

I remember an article from back then saying that both of them refused to show themselves "down" or "on the ground". Or something like that. I can't recall the exact details

Him, Vin & Statham honestly think themselves as indestructible bulldozers. Which, I'm gonna be honest is not entertaining to watch.

reply

Agreed. I saw Wrath of Man last month and while the movie is good it could have been so much better if they did not make Statham the Terminator, or at least cast someone who is a normal guy who can get knocked down or killed. Seagal killed his career (well because of this and many other reasons why) because his character was never in any danger he was barely even ever hit.

reply

That's why I absolutely love Jackie Chan. Even with all his acrobatics & martial arts, he still gets ass kicked. He's beaten, on the ground, all bloody. His characters get hurt. His characters feel very human

Heck, even "macho men" like Stalllone & Schwarzenegger got beaten up & bloody. But Vin, Statham & The Rock's characters are all the same. They feel like machines. Nothing fazes them. No matter what's thrown at them

Keanu Reeves as John Wick is one of the most popular & iconic characters ever put on screen. And no matter how much they talk big about him & how much they make him out to be the boogeyman & an unstoppable killer, He's still beaten up. He's barely escaping at times.

reply

I've been tired of him for awhile now. It's not that I don't like him, I just want variety. It's bad enough that we don't get variety in our movies, we could use some different faces in the big budget type films.

reply

I still like him to an extent. And I think he's a pretty decent actor. He has really improved over the years but but man oh man, he stars in the most generic & forgettable films.

I get that he's trying to be this generation action star. But his choice in movies is (mostly) so bland.

reply

I think, as someone else said, it's chiefly about protecting the brand, although I'm sure these guys have egos the size of planets. I agree with what you say, it makes the heroes far more relatable if they come back from some serious knocks. It's why we root for Rocky so hard, or Batman in TDKR. Hell, look at Bruce Lee against Chuck Norris in Way of the Dragon. He gets his ass kicked for the first half of the fight, and no-one thinks any less of Lee because of it. He's still regarded as one of the biggest badasses ever put onscreen.

reply

Same with Jackie Chan. He gets beaten up & humiliated in his films but he's still beloved by millions across the globe.

When the hero is down, all bloodied up & humiliated, it makes his eventual victory that much sweeter. He actually overcomes an obstacle. Instead of being a bulldozing machine.

That's why I couldn't get into Jason Statham & Vin Diesel's action films. Same as Dwayne Johnson but at least The Rock is charming when given the right script.

reply

Absolutely. And thinking about Lee again, his most iconic posters are probably those from Enter the Dragon, where he's covered in bloody claw marks/scratches/gouges.

reply

I mentioned this in another comment but just look at Keanu Reeves. A more recent one of his roles, John Wick has become such an ICONIC character. The name alone is synonymous with badassery now.

But no matter how amazing & scary he is, he STILL gets his ass kicked & has been on the brink of death a couple of times. Far from invincible

reply

Great example. John Wick wins, but he takes some serious damage getting there.
