More than just a cow-poke horse wrangler

When I finally started to be aware of Ben Johnson, I thought he was a good horseman/stunt man who got lucky with a few interesting film roles. That may be partly true, but if you notice how many productions he's been in -- from great to be not-so-great -- he had a fantastic career with multiple appearances across many genres. For whatever reason, he seemed like a director's favorite, and he shows up everywhere. He can seem easy-going but then has gravitas, an authenticity that is hard to duplicate.
And he seems not much appreciated. Maybe like Sam Elliott, Ben Johnson is one-of-a-kind.
