She died of breast cancer and had a mastectomy, and this is 1907 we're talking about. Then Addie insisted she be given an experimental early form of chemotherapy after the operation. This consisted of having a chemical put into the wounds to burn out the cancer. The treatment was so agonising that the poor woman was left unable to swallow and died anyway.
