Can he really speak German?

I doubt it. I just found out he doesn't even speak Spanish, which was really disappointing.

I'm an American who speaks German, and I thought he did pretty well. Though I wouldn't be surprised if he just learned those few lines phonetically.

I'm pretty sure he doesn't. Although he does a good job delivering his lines, it's obvious, that he learnt the words phonetically. The really odd thing about this scene is, that the so called "German Surgeon" also doesn't speak german. While Hernandez' words are very clear and easy to understand, I don't have a clue, what the "german" guy was saying ...
