The Bible rent story

I've heard him tell this story several times about his mother paying his rent for a year to pursue his comedy on one condition that he reads the bible she gave him. Even though he doesn't say, but he makes it seem like he didn't crack the bible open for months, so wouldn't he have called his mother and said, "I thought you were going to pay my rent."

I've heard this same story being told before many years ago, but I can't remember who it was or if it was on a t.v. show.
