Now British actor Steven Graham played a great Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire but isn't TH tired of gangsters? Apparently not.

ETA Ok the movie apparently will focus on Al Capone later in life. Oh I forgot he was to play Capone in another movie?

To say that Josh Trank has had a rough few years would be an understatement. After breaking out with “Chronicle,” the filmmaker made the leap to the big leagues, landing two blockbuster gigs: directing the “Fantastic Four” reboot, and helming a “Star Wars” spinoff. Unfortunately, things didn’t go well. A combination of studio interference and Trank’s reportedly bad behavior tanked the superhero movie, and the stress of being in the spotlight led the director to exit the “Star Wars” movie. And ever since, Trank has been off the radar, and it wouldn’t unreasonable to assume that he might want to take a long break before returning to moviemaking. However, he’s dusted himself off, landed an A-list star, and is moving ahead with a very promising sounding project.

Tom Hardy has signed up to play gangster Al Capone in “Fonzo,” which will be written and directed by Trank. The film will take a unique focus, catching up with the criminal at the age of 47, following nearly a decade of imprisonment, as dementia rots Capone’s mind. Past becomes present, as harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life.

Not only is this good news for Trank, but also for Hardy, who has been eager to play Capone for a while now. Back in 2012, he was prepping to portray the character in “Cicero,” a planned trilogy that was brewing at Warner Bros. with longtime “Harry Potter” franchise helmer David Yates directing.

“I’ve been working with Warner Bros., watching their gangster films — the ones with James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart and Edward G. Robinson,” Hardy said at the time. “The idea isn’t to remake those films but to get a flavour of them as we explore Capone’s career as a racketeer.”

Well, he’ll finally get to put that preparation to good use. Pre-production is already underway on “Fonzo,” and we’re glad to see Trank back behind the camera, and Hardy gearing up for what sounds like a showcase role.

The comparison to Blackmass isn't exhilarating in the slightest. The last time I saw Hardy play a gangster, Legend, I felt it was a massive disappointment. Though, not a lot of blame rest on Hardy for that. It lacked the spontaneity that I've seen from him in the past: The Take.

I wonder how he will mesh with Trank given his strong opinion on directors.

I'm not thrilled with this, how could he after working with Innaritu and Nolan decided to do a film with Josh Trank? This director only has one credible movie which is Chronicle which I can say nothing too great about it especially with those endless shaky cam. Just dropped out of this Tom, please?

Any idea on Tom's timeline regarding making these films? Obviously we are due to see Taboo and then Dunkirk but any idea what he's actually making next?

Obviously the Capone project has just come through along with the Ernest Shackleton film and then the Don McCullin war photographer film! I did also read somewhere that he was teaming up with Steven knight for a project again very soon

Suffice it to say that I thought it was a hoax at first but until it was clear it was being reported by other credible movie sites. Not because of the director though my reaction was Who? but I didn't think another gangster is indicative of a different direction. But as well Mr. Hardy is still attached for far more movies than he will probably get to - an an actor that is a good thing since there will always be a certain percentage that end up never happening through no fault of his own and then there will be the films that just won't fit into the schedule of course.

I'm looking forward to it and hope it turns out well. I'm a fan of gangster films and shows and loved "Boardwalk Empire" and "Peaky Blinders". Tom was supposed to play Al a couple years ago but the movie fell through. I've never watched this director's movies and have seen some posts but we won't know how it is till it's out. It'll be interesting to see what other real-life gangsters they use as from watching "Boardwalk Empire" and others movies about Al there could be a lot depending on which stories the flashbacks focus on. Johnny Torrio will be for sure, as well as Al's brothers and those who took over after Al died. I'm hoping also Charlie Luciano, Meyer Lansky, and Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel as Al knew them when he was young in NY and later when Charlie took over and formed the Commission.
