Perfect Tony Stark.

To be quite honest, I was never fully sold on the idea that Downey Jr is Tony Stark/Iron Man. And quite frankly, I'm still not sold. Yeah, I liked him in Civil War, but he still not a Tony Stark that I knew from the comics. I've been an Iron Man fan since I was six, and I never pictured Tony Stark as this narcissistic, clownish douche with women-like mannerisms, which is who Downey Jr is (at least in Iron Man 2-3 and in the Avengers 2). The Tony Stark that I remember from my childhood was a subtle, dark, sophisticated, humorless man with well-rounded personality, who had complexity and conflict to him. Hamm has all of that. He can play an emotionally torn Tony Stark from Denny O'Neil's era, but he can also play a rough Tony Stark from Len Kaminski's era. Let alone the fact that he visually and physically more closer to the comic book accurate Tony Stark. Tony Stark should be tough. Downey Jr can't be tough. He just doesn't have that type of personality. Hamm is tough (at least he can act as such). Jon Hamm - perfect Tony Stark.

RDJR has ten times Hamm's talent. I like Mad Men, but Hamm isn't great on the big screen. He's a TV actor, just like Matthew Fox, Josh Holloway, and countless others. Jon Hamm disappears in movies.

Robert Downey Jr has made the Iron Man and Avengers franchises. The guy is box office gold. Without Robert Downey Jr, there is no franchise (for either Iron Man or the Avengers). If he were 6' 1", you would sing a different tune. It's always about height with guys like you.

I never read comics. I have almost no interest in the world of comic books. I watch Iron man and the Avengers almost entirely for Robert Downey Jr. The guy has stratospheric talent and screen charisma. have you seen Guy Ritchie's stupid Sherlock Holmes movies? They are unwatchable, except for RDJR and Law.

People trash on RDJR, Tom Cruise, and Daniel Craig because they are not tall, but these guys have TONS of charisma and talent.

Similarly, I thought Jesse Eisenberg was the only good part of Superman vs Batman.

I don't know about Ironman..Hamm was my top pick to play Bruce Wayne in BvS..Affleck is a horrible Batman..

So why he's not using it? From what I've seen so far with Hamm in Mad Men and in Town, he can wipe his ass with (current) Downey Jr. and his acting abilities.

I like Mad Men, but Hamm isn't great on the big screen.

Wasn't he great in Town? I'm pretty sure he was great in that movie. Under the right direction, Hamm can give Downey Jr. run for his 50 million paychecks.

Jon Hamm disappears in movies.

Because he hasn't been given a role worthy of him yet.

Robert Downey Jr has made the Iron Man and Avengers franchises.

Em... No. Marvel and the directors made those franchises. Downey Jr. just played the role. The role in which he was good only in two movies out of seven or some movies.

The guy is box office gold.

Just like Johny Depp and Will Smith. Still, doesn't make him a better fit for what Tony Stark supposed to be.

Without Robert Downey Jr, there is no franchise (for either Iron Man or the Avengers).

Yeah, tell that to those other dozens of multi-million dollar franchises that didn't have Downey Jr. yet made tons of money anyway.

If he were 6' 1", you would sing a different tune. It's always about height with guys like you.

I don't really care about physicality of the actor who plays a certain character as long as he's not too fat or too skinny. I mentioned the physicality aspect only to show that Jon Hamm bares more resemblance to the comic book Tony Stark. My main point was that he behaves like Tony Stark from the comics.

I never read comics.

Good. So we can end our discussion right here. This was a topic by a comic book fan. You should've noticed it immediately and then ignore it, since this topic was about something with which you're not familiar with. All in all, my comments will not change a jack thing anyway, so I don't know why were even interested in responding to me.

Turns out he has been offered super hero roles and turned them all down..

i think hamm is a bad actor. many guys on tv seem good (hamm, matthew fox), until they do film. hamm is very handsome. i'm not denying that. but he's not a good actor. he's just a handsome guy with a great smile. anybody with the right look could have played don draper.

Really? You responded to me four months later?

reply

Huh? I don't get notifications/updates. I just watched Keeping Up with the Jonses and visited Hamm's page. I'm 47. I work 60 hours a week trading stocks. I don't tend to my IMDB like it's a garden.

Okay, then. But, to counter your point: Chris Evans wasn't considered good actor before he didn't became Captain America. (And I'd say he still not that great of an actor.) But he overshadowed Downey Jr. with his character. So same can be said about Hamm, who's actually better actor than Evans.
