Directing the new Halloween? WTF?

I hope John Carpenter knows what he is doing. He has named the director of such classic horror movies as Pineapple Express and The Sitter to handle the re-remake of Halloween.
I had been really excited about the project. I hoped the new director would at least exorcise the ghosts of those craptastic Rob Zombie offerings. Sadly I have my doubts now.

I don't know if you know this...but he actually directed more dramatic serious films like Joe (Nicolas Cage) and a film called Snow Angels before he did comedies. Personally, I think he's a pretty interesting and unique choice to direct the new remake IMO.

I really hope you are right. I saw Pineapple Express and I'm really concerned, throw in Danny McBride and its panic time. Halloween is a pretty special movie to me, so not liking what I'm hearing so far. Hopefully I will be proven wrong.

I don't like the sound of this, either. I feel like JC himself should take on the task of rebooting the series and setting the tone.

I also don't really like the fact that we won't be able to talk about the film here when it comes out, haha.

reply

Are you really criticizing this decision because he's never made a horror movie? That's what makes this decision so great.

reply

How does having a comedian direct a serious horror film make it a great idea?
Well actually Danny McBride isn't directing it, but the guy who is doesn't seem to have any experience in horror movies. He directed "Pineapple Express" which IMO kind of sucked, so I'm concerned.

I even more concerned with Danny McBride's involvement. I think he wrote the script or something. I'm not a fan of his work so it's scary that he's involved--for me anyway.

Didn't know it was a prerequisite that you have to have experience in horror to direct a horror movie. Plus, we're talking about a horror slasher film. It's not there's a great degree of difficulty there. The only thing I'm concerned with is that they find a talented director, and while you may disagree, I think they did. I'd rather have him over someone like Eli Roth for example, who has plenty of experience in horror but is an awful filmmaker.

reply

Well I agree with you on Eli Roth. I could be wrong. It isn't a prerequisite that you have experience in horror films to direct one, but I'd be a lot less concerned if the new Halloween was being directed by James Wan or someone with a good track record with the genre.

I think 'slasher' film is a misnomer regarding 'Halloween" It is better than that. I think if you lump this movie with all those generic crappy slasher flicks you are missing the main point. 'Halloween' is, IMO, a modern day classic. It is a genuinely suspenseful, well made horror movie. If these people were handling a reboot of 'Slumber Party Massacre' then fine, but 'Halloween' is more than that. I just hope they are up for the task.

that Peele guy who has done nothing but comedy has Get Out coming out which is getting good reviews. This is a left field choice but i have a good feeling.
