Calvary
I just saw it and Gleeson was his usual superb self but it was so bleak. There were only 3 likeable characters, the father (Gleeson), his daughter and the widow. Your thoughts?

shareThe film is very good but it's so depressing.

Loved the film and, yes, it was very dark but also extremely funny in parts. Granted, there weren't many people to like - most of them were very damaged/twisted in one way or another. The American writer was a nice guy. I enjoyed the murder mystery element of the story even though the murder hadn't yet happened.
I've seen the film twice now and I will be buying the DVD when it comes out. I think it's a movie that will repay many viewings. I was brought up a Catholic (now an atheist) and I suspect there's a lot more religious symbolism in there that I haven't fully taken on board yet.
It's a very powerful film and Gleeson gives a magnificent performance.
It is my business to protect your majesty.... against all things.
It's close to a masterpiece.
Characters likeable or not: thats u
s and not someone else. They represent mankind.
