Performance in Indignation....

Having seen Sarah in a number of her films, I think her turn in "Indignation" is the finest so far in a feature film. The character's intelligence, fragility and the sense that she could go off the rails at any time are convincingly and heartbreakingly portrayed by Sarah. And she's really lovely to look at on film.

She was easily the weakest part of the movie. Even the protagonist's mother was a better actress, not to mention the dean.

First of all, the casting director deserves an A+ because all the main and supporting characters were perfect. I've seen the film twice and feel the actors were outstanding.

Gadon's performance was terrific IMO because she projected an intelligence and elegance befitting her background, but there is also a real sense of danger for Marcus due to the turmoil we feel right beneath the surface of her character. As viewers, we understand she is going to be trouble for him right away. Gadon deserves credit for subtlety projecting this balance. She is an absolutely perfect WASP goddess.

All felt a bit telegraphed to me. I like her but so far I feel her role choices are too obvious and she hasn't really had a chance to cut loose - everything she has done has had an element of affectation. She is good, but things like Indignation and Louis Drax feel a bit like lip service, I feel she is finding her way in a commendable fashion but needs to take more chances, even though she kinda looks like she does on paper, being someone straddling mainstream and arthouse so far . . .

With all due respect, I wouldn't use the word "affectation" in connection with the performance in this particular case nor her other turns.

Her character carried and comported herself as expected in the company of others in this period piece during the decade depicted in "Indignation." Putting aside her naughty behavior , she outwardly appeared to conform given the rigidity of the times, but one sensed much going on beneath the tranquil and lovely exterior. I think she played it very well. I haven't read the novel yet, but I had the sense their was something nasty in her relationship with her father that perhaps had dire consequences in her life.
