His character in HTGAWM

This really isn't bothering me but I'm just curious. . .is there any reason why he's not using his English accent on the show? Is his character supposed to be American?

Since I know he's English I was kind of disappointed when I started watching the show and heard him speaking with a Standard American accent. I was also thinking that it's not uncommon for undergraduate/post-graduate,etc students to be international so it's not like it's unusual to have a non-American person attending an American law school.

I've noticed that a lot of English actors do that (or get asked to do that) when they appear in American made TV shows and movies (Idris Elba and Naomie Harris come to mind).

Like I said it's not critical that there be a reason, I was just wondering. . .

I understand that there are international students at universities but it's not really the norm in law school, is it?

If he spoke with his English accent, it would be a distraction from the plot/character etc.

Perhaps more will be revealed as the show goes on.

He's so adorable!!

True, it's very typical for students to study abroad so it's not at all unbelievable that there would be an Englishman among the ranks. I'm sure there was a reason for this. For example, you mentioned Idris Elba -- I'm assuming you're referring to his role on The Wire. That show was based in Baltimore and most of the characters were from there, including Elba's character. It simply wouldn't have fit the authentic environment they'd set up, for him to have retained his native accent.

This is not a spoiler, but just something that I think may come out at some point in the future. He might have to be American, because he is Annalise Keating's son that she put up for adoption when she was in law school... But that might just be the soap opera watcher in me.

Yeah, I don't think that'll happen  But hey, this show is rather silly, so who knows? Could go either way.

OMG!! I was having the same thought earlier today after I watched the last episode!!!! LoL! One of the many possibilities that runs through my mind is that it turns out he's her son. That would explain the strange/complicated dynamic they seem to have.

Guess actors in American shows (and the producers) want to ensure they fit in and are understood while speaking American English.
Same for books and audiobooks: The Spook and Harry Potter series need American English versions!

As for accents being distracting...I've given up watching Marvel's Agents of SHIELD.
