I must have missed the memo

that said almost marginally attractive women playing individuals with no social skills make great TV characters. Where did the characters with no social skills come from, anyway? Aside from “Tempy” we have Hugh Laurie on House, Marl Harmon on NCIS and I am probably missing a few because I only watch reruns.

I just figure these shows are featuring characters most Americans can relate to or are similar to. Now if Emily wanted to lose about 15 to 20 pounds from around her hips, thighs, butt and stomach you could probably move her up from the “almost marginally attractive women” category to the “marginally attractive women” category. But then there appears to be an unwritten rule in America that says most women and men have to be at least 20 pounds overweight so...

It appears the creators and producers of these shows are attempting to send Americans a message stating something to the effect that if you are extremely intelligent or capable it is okay to be a social clown because your intelligence or capability are the only things you have going for you. Ifyou are not extremely intelligent, you will do just fine socially. Those are your 2 choices in life: you can either be an extremely intelligent social clown or an unintelligent person who gets along with others.

You obviously don't watch Bones and "Tempe" very closely, or you would see that during the show it's also followed her grow and become better socially - OK she still has a long way to go, but it's partly about the journey. Also, if you watched the show, you would know that she is partly that way because she was abandoned by her parents etc etc. And all I'll say about the "marginally attractive" thing is - different strokes for different folks. I think Emily is gorgeous, and she is not overweight, just not a stick figure either. Also, the show Bones is losely based on the books of Kathy Reichs about a forensic anthropologist of the same name (Temperance Brennan).

If you watched NCIS, you would know that "Mark Harmon" (Gibbs) lost his wife and daughter which meant he pulled back from people too. And if you don't like these shows, don't watch them. *shrug* Bones and NCIS are my fave two shows - they show that people are not perfect. I'm sure you are not perfect either. People like Tempe and Gibbs DO exist, so why should they not be represented. There are like 1 billion reality tv shows that have no substance to them at all, so why not have some "brainy" (well in the case of Bones anyway, and possibly House - not sure on that though) shows too?

Can't comment on House - don't watch that.

I’ve watched enough Bones and NCIC to be very aware that Tempe was abandoned by her parents and Gibbs lost his wife and daughter to drug runners. It’s just that some people get over it faster than others. Let’s see Tempe is in her 30s. Let’s give her 5 or 6 years to get over the abandonment, get her feet settled on the ground and start moving forward. So in 10 to 15 years this is as far as she has developed? Most people would have given up on her long ago.

Insofar as Gibbs is concerned given the Human Resource policies the federal government has in real life he would be turning over an agent every 6 weeks or so. After less than a year of this he would be out on the street. What I enjoy about NCIS is Gibbs is whatever he is, Tony is a man/child, Abby is among other things a spastic, Ducky just bores people to tears, McGee as intelligent as he is, develops about as rapidly as Tempe. It appears the character who is closest to being “normal” is Ziva, a trained Mossad assassin. Is there a message in there?

Yeah, I'm thinking that the message is that you obviously don't like these sort of shows, so don't bother wasting your time watching them. ;)

God knows I can't stand "reality" tv (bar Amazing Race, coz I work in the travel industry so I like to see where they go) so I just do not bother to waste my time watching reality tv. Perhaps you should just do the same with shows like Bones and NCIS and such.

If you dont like the shows thats fine, but to think you know how long it would take someone to get over their past is a bit odd. Different people get over things at different speeds. I know some people who still wont fly after 9/11 where as I would have been fine flyin any day of the week

Some people never quite get over traumatic events in their lives.

As for Gibbs well he works for NCIS, they dont recruit the namby pamby types. They need men and woman who can make tough choices. His detachment if you can call it that from his team makes him a valuable resource to NCIS. And even with his temper and his lets get to the point attitude he still cares for those he woks closest with as well as the people hes tryin to help. He might not seem like a nice guy but maybe you havnt seen as many episodes to accept him as being a sort of father figue to the group.

He watches over them, tries to get them to do their best each and every time and to make them more and more self sufficiant. They may all be agents of NCIS but as long as Gibbs is their CO or whatever hes still going to push them to do better.

Anywho my talking about these shows is not going to make you like them but maybe your just not seein them in the right light.

You wanna blame someone though blame Vin Diesel, he made the bad guy a good guy and Hollywood jumped on it and latched on like never before.

I agree with you with Gibbs character, if any one of them is in real trouble he will do anything to help them. I can't remember the episode but Mcgee's sister was going to be arrested for murder, and only thing Gibbs was mad at was he didn't come to Gibbs for help, and yelled at him for staying quiet during the interrogation because he wanted to protect him. And the episodes where Abby is in danger he is ready to go deer hunter on that person.

Its not about getting over, its events that shape who these people become. Like Gibbs, after the death of his first wife, he had a hard time keeping relationships, hence all the ex wives. No matter who you are, going through a trauma changes you, unless of course you are a sociopath to begin with, then, hey, everything is peaches.
