One of the best actors who needs good scripts

I just have trouble understanding how he doesn't get top notch scripts with top directors. He's not old-looking, is an actor who can completely change for any part, incredibly popular and yet somehow he's stuck doing mediocre films. You watch Hal from Malcolm in the Middle, then Walter White and then Trumbo. You can't believe it's the same person.
