That ute for sale when Wilderpeople released...

There was brief media attention given to comments made by Waititi about the sale of the original ute used in the ad featuring Crump produced in the 80's.

The seller wanted $25K for the rusted ute. Waititi's comments on social media called out the seller for "cashing in" on the release of his film, and encouraged potential buyers not to pay these "blaggards" a cent.

The responses from the public include:

1) (self) Righteous indignation that anyone should try to make money off a product that is inalienably Taika Waititi's... the ute not being his at all.

2) Amusement at Taika Waititi's genius sense of showmanship in finding a media opportunity to raise the profile of his film (within a demographic that was already going to see the film regardless, or couldn't care less).

I find these rather unlikely, and I certainly thought more of Waititi before entertaining the first possibility...

I thought the logical and far more likely possibilities were:

1) Waititi had done his research and found the ute to have in the film, and the owner had wanted more than he thought it was worth. Hence Waititi calling these people 'blaggards'. Which was pretty strong just for wanting to sell the ute they'd held onto for some time and kept in storage as a collector's item.

2) Waititi is mates with the owner and wanted to create interest in the auction.

Anyone have any insight into the ACTUAL reason Waititi got involved in this mud-slinging?
