So...is his career over or is he just going indie on purpose?

I honestly can't tell. I get the sense that he had a few chances to blow up, with Nick and Norah, Year One Youth in Revolt and Scott Pilgrim and they all stalled at the box office, particularly Scott Pilgrim, for which he probably made his largest paycheck (I'm guessing $5MM or more) and so he's been shut out of big studio Hollywood and has been forced to go the indie route.

Or do people think he's chosen to go indie?

I think that because the POS movie The Social Network blew up, all of his potential movie rolls have been going to Jessie Eisenburg.
